Every August, you can look forward to the summer festival in the Olympiapark. In addition to this fixture on the city’s event calendar, there’s another event this year in a different Munich park that you should check out. The Westparkfest promises a weekend-long, diverse program for all ages that’s full of fun and lets you discover new corners of the park.
A New Edition of the Anniversary Celebration
Originally, Westpark was only supposed to exist for one summer. It was created as part of the 1983 International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA). Instead of dismantling the park, it was ultimately kept, much to the delight of the people of Munich. In 2023, the park’s 40th anniversary was celebrated with the Westparkfest, which was a huge success. Due to the positive response back then, the Westparkfest is returning this year—for the third time—even without an anniversary to mark.
From Friday, August 28, through Sunday, August 30, various activities, stations, demonstrations, and food trucks await you throughout the park, ensuring there’s never a dull moment (or a hungry stomach). The program kicks off at noon on Friday and at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The evening film program at the Mond & Sterne cinema wraps things up around 11 p.m. Almost the entire program is free; you’ll only need to pay admission for the cinema and the summer curling.
Fun for all ages at the Westpark Festival
The Westparkfest offers a diverse range of activities throughout the weekend, with something for absolutely everyone. On all three days, there will be exhibitions where you can admire art and handmade jewelry. Food will be provided by, among others, the Ochsenbraterei, which will give you a taste of the upcoming Oktoberfest and also has vegan options up its sleeve. Starting at noon on each of the three days, you can also try your hand at “Sommerstockschießen” —the summer version of curling. On various guided tours through the park, you’ll learn more about herbs, biodiversity, and sustainability.
Get henna tattoos at the “Gans am Wasser” and then enjoy live music at various stations. Kids will also find great activities throughout the park, where they can paint, do crafts, and make their own ice cream. On Saturday, there’s a family afternoon on the lake stage with ventriloquist Matze. In the evening, you can take your first steps to Latin rhythms at the salsa introductory class at Gans am Wasser and then party at the ABBA party at Kino & Mond und Sterne. Or you can stay at Gans am Wasser and enjoy the fire show instead.
