On hot days, we all just want to jump into the water to cool off a bit. Munich’s diverse selection of outdoor pools offers just that—and delights visitors with its range of recreational activities as well. Most of the pools have large sunbathing areas where you can relax. But very few can claim to have a sandy beach as part of their offerings. The Prinzregentenbad in Bogenhausen stands out precisely for that—and for much more.
Summer at the Prinze
The Prinzregentenstadion was built in 1933 as Munich’s first outdoor ice rink and was expanded to include a swimming pool three years later. Ever since, this idyllic facility has delighted young and old alike during the summer months. In fact, the pool was on the verge of closing in the 1990s: The city had actually planned to tear it down, but protests from the public fortunately prevented this. Instead , the Prinzregentenbad underwent a major renovation in 2001 to bring it up to modern standards.
An annual highlight at the pool is the “Prinze Beach,” which is created here at the edge of the adventure pool. About 540 metric tons of sand are used to form both a sunbathing area and beach volleyball courts. With your toes in the golden sand, a refreshing ice cream from the kiosk, and a view of the water, you’ll really feel like you’re on vacation.
For more excitement, take a leap from the 3-meter-high diving tower or zoom down the 50-meter-long water slide. In the adventure pool, you can swim laps in the current channel or relax on the massage loungers. Meanwhile, the little ones can have fun in the splash area. Those who prefer a more athletic experience can swim laps in the 25-meter pool —and it’s best to come for early-morning swimming.

Even though it’s hard to accept: eventually, summer comes to an end—and with it, the season at the Prinzregentenbad. Still, you don’t have to go without the Prinzregentenstadion entirely, because the ice rink reopens in the winter. Every Sunday morning, you can take part in free ice dancing lessons and learn how to glide across the ice with a partner. In addition to the ice rink, there are also two lanes for curling. And to warm up, there’s mulled wine.
You’ll have to do without warming up in the sauna, though. Of all the SWM pools, the Prinzregentenbad has the largest sauna area, but it was destroyed by a major fire in 20222. Reconstruction work is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027. Then you’ll be able to visit the Prinzregentenbad not only for swimming or ice skating, but also to enjoy the saunas. Until then, relax on the beach in the sun and enjoy some well-deserved rest.
