Munich has many cool outdoor pools with a variety of offerings that provide a refreshing escape on warm summer days. The largest of them is the Michaelibad in Perlach, which offers a full range of activities both indoors and outdoors. Summer fun for over 70 years
The Michaelibad opened its doors in 1955 and, right from the start, offered plenty of fun for young and old alike with its five pools. Back then, thelandmark was the restaurant’s floating pavilion roof, which was typical of the weightless architecture of the 1950s. However, it had to make way in 1973 for the construction of the subway station that bears the outdoor pool’s name. The indoor pool also opened that same year and has been a part of the Michaelibad ever since.
Just like at the Schyrenbad, Olympic athletes trained in the outdoor pool’s 50-meter lane, for which starting blocks were installed. Another renovation took place in the late ’90s, giving the Michaelibad its current look and transforming it into a modern recreational facility.
Throughout the Year at the Michaelibad
Today, the Michaelibad is divided into an indoor and an outdoor pool area, covering a total of 66,300 square meters. This means you can enjoy swimming here all year round, no matter the weather. In the summer, of course, the outdoor pool area is the most attractive. In the 50-meter pool, you can show off your athletic side, while the adventure pool with its 64-meter-long slide is all about action. For an even bigger adrenaline rush, head to the diving tower, which offers four different levels ranging from 1 to 10 meters. In the non-swimmers’ pool, you’ll keep your feet on the ground, while the little ones have fun in the splash area.
You can also have plenty of fun and get some exercise outside the water at the Michaelibad. Younger children can run around on the playground, while older kids can bounce on the trampolines. Several beach volleyball courts invite you to play a match , and in the calisthenics area, you can give your muscles a workout. If you’re in the mood for relaxation rather than exertion, you should check out the indoor pool’s sauna area. In addition to a Finnish sauna and steam room , it features Munich’s only “Erd-Loft” sauna, located inside a mound of earth. You’ll need to purchase tickets for the indoor pool and saunas separately from your outdoor pool admission.
