Some would say that the perfect summer experience is traveling to a faraway country. That’s a misconception: You can have just as much (or more) fun right here in Munich. The heat, the cold drinks, the green grass, and the fresh water… Seriously! What could be better than spending the day at a swimming pool? You can work on your tan, practice your swimming strokes, play a little beach volleyball, or just lie there and watch the clouds drift by. Whatever gets you going, you won’t find a better place for it than these six beautiful outdoor pools in Munich.
Maria Einsiedel Natural Swimming Pool
The Maria Einsiedel Natural Swimming Area is the closest thing to swimming in a natural lake right in the middle of the city. The water is naturally purified by microorganisms, so the pool operates entirely without chlorine. It also features one of the oldest nude-swimming areas in all of Munich, as well as plenty of space for playing and lounging. But the absolute highlight is, of course, the 400-meter-long Mühlbach, a tributary of the Isar. It runs right through the middle of the outdoor pool, and you can let yourself drift along it just like you would on the Eisbach.
Schyrenbad
Opened in 1847, the Schyrenbad is both a piece of Munich’s history and an outstanding outdoor pool. Of course, it has been renovated several times since its opening and has plenty to offer. From wide water slides and a chess board to table tennis, a beer garden , and four huge pools, this swimming facility has something for everyone. Kids can run around to their heart’s content here, while athletes can work up a sweat in the lap pool. The Rosengarten is also nearby, inviting you to take a stroll before or after a day at the pool.
Dantebad
The Dantebad is probably the warmest of Munich’s outdoor pools. It features a 50-meter pool heated to about 27 degrees and a 30-degree wellness pool with underwater loungers and massage jets. The water mushroom and the current channel, on the other hand, provide plenty of action. The stadium’s bleachers, meanwhile, are perfect for sunbathing. And for those who want to take a break from all that relaxation, the large adjacent lawn is perfect for practicing any sport. If you still haven’t had enough of swimming under the open sky once the outdoor swimming season ends, the Dantebad is also there for you: you can actually swim here even in winter.
Ungererbad
The Ungererbad in Schwabing offers the most complete summer experience of any outdoor pool in Munich. The aquatic facilities include a lap pool with a diving tower featuring 1- and 3-meter-high diving boards. There are also two additional pools—one for diving and one for visitors to cool off—as well as an entire trampoline area. The little ones can splash around in the adventure pool and a wading pool. And if that’s not enough, the athletic among you can work up a sweat on the two beach volleyball courts and the soccer field next to the pools.
Georgenschwaige Natural Swimming Pool
The Georgenschwaige Natural Pool is certainly one of the most beautiful outdoor pools in Munich. It offers chlorine-free, naturally treated water that flows through a 1,000 m² filter system several times a day. It also features a 50-meter lap pool, a spiral slide, a children’s wading area with a playground, and a large sunbathing lawn. You can relax on a small sandy beach and feel like you’re on vacation.
Michaelibad in Neuperlach
The Michaelibad is the perfect spot for all water lovers: Right next to Ostpark, the “Michi” offers four pools (a lap pool, a non-swimmer pool, a diving pool, and an adventure pool). And right there alongside them are a 10-meter diving tower and a 64-meter-long adventure slide. If that’s not enough, you can head indoors: The facility also includes an indoor pool with an even longer 84-meter slide and a sauna.
