You don’t need your own car to get from A to B in Munich. You can easily reach most places by bus, train, and tram, and if you do find yourself in a more remote area, Miles, Uber, and Bolt are your best friends. If, on the other hand, you want to be more active, the situation looks rather bleak: since fall 2025, the MVG bikes that you could previously rent to pedal through the streets are no longer available. Fortunately, you won’t have to do without rental bikes for long, because the new “MyRadl” system is set to be introduced in Munich this spring.
MyRadl throughout the MVV area

Last fall, the old MVG bike rental system was discontinued, and since then there has been no adequate replacement. That is set to change in spring 2026, when the new bike-sharing system called MyRadl is launched. The tender was won by Leipzig-based service provider Nextbike, which had already operated the old MVG bikes. Unlike the old bikes, the new fleet will be available throughout the MVV area, so you can also rent a MyRadl outside Munich.
There will be around 1,000 locations in 36 cities, including Fürstenfeldbruch, Oberschleißheim, Germering, Freising, and Gröbenzell. The reintroduction of the system is intended to close the existing gap and serve to cover the last few kilometers between home and the final destination. To this end, rental stations will be set up at existing stops so that towns and markets in the surrounding area are better connected to local transport. You can rent and return the bikes across municipal and city boundaries.
Germany’s largest bike-sharing fleet

Munich used to have around 4,500 MVG bikes. MyRadl is set to be significantly larger, as unlike the old system, it includes the surrounding area. Nextbike plans to provide around 7,000 bicycles, e-bikes, and pedelecs. This would give MyRadl the largest fleet of rental bikes in Germany.
Exactly when it will start is not yet clear. So far, there is talk of spring 2026, but it remains to be seen whether this means March or May. How exactly the rental system will work and what rates you will pay to use it are also not yet publicly known. Bike sharing is to be integrated into existing apps, such as those from MVG, DB, and MVV.
