A subway car that no longer runs but now serves guests? A crane with gondolas and carriages suspended from it? Yes, this is a place for dancing, rapping, shopping, and crafting: Bahnwärter Thiel transforms old vehicles, shipping containers, and a former rail yard into a colorful world of music, art, and nightlife.
From a former livestock market to a creative container city
The story began in 2015 on the grounds of the former large livestock market. Founder Daniel Hahn and his team wanted to create a place where art and culture could take place outside of established venues. After several location changes, the project moved to the former rail spur of the slaughterhouse in 2018.
The transport of two decommissioned Munich subway cars was particularly spectacular: they were brought onto the grounds using heavy-haul trucks and a crane. What once carried passengers through the city was given a completely new purpose here.

Gerhart Hauptmann gave the cultural venue its name
Bahnwärter Thiel is named after the novella of the same name by Gerhart Hauptmann from 1888. It tells the tragic story of a dutiful railroad signalman whose life increasingly falls apart following family tragedies and ultimately ends in catastrophe. More than 125 years later, the literary character found his way into Munich’s cultural scene: With its decommissioned subway cars and old rail tracks, *Der Bahnwärter Thiel* connects the world of railroads with art, music, and nightlife. Even the name “Minna Thiel,” another Munich cultural project, traces back to the novella: in it, Minna is the railway guard’s late first wife.
Christmas magic amid old subway cars and colorful shipping containers
New projects are constantly emerging among the graffiti artworks. The program ranges from concerts and club nights to flea markets and movie nights, as well as readings, workshops, and theater. Even an urban gardening project has found a home on the former industrial site.
Starting November 19, 2026, the Bahnwärter Thiel will show its festive side: During the Mondscheinexpress, the former rail yard will be transformed into an unusual Christmas market through December 23. Amid decommissioned subway cars, colorfully painted shipping containers, and twinkling lights, you’ll find arts and crafts, street food, fire pits, and organic mulled wine. On the small stage, live concerts and DJs provide a variety of musical entertainment. Admission is free!
From Munich’s alternative music scene to hip-hop by candlelight
Anyone looking to discover even more extraordinary musical experiences after a visit to Bahnwärter Thiel can look forward to “Candlelight: Hip-Hop on String Instruments.” On November 14, 2026, a string quartet at the Auferstehungskirche will transform well-known hip-hop hits into a special live experience by the light of thousands of candles. The program includes songs and medleys by 2Pac, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and The Notorious B.I.G., among others—a completely different setting for music that also shapes Munich’s alternative cultural scene.
