A Christmas market on an island that can only be reached by boat or a Christmas market all in pink – we know and love our markets of a different kind here in Bavaria. In the Bavarian Forest, however, you’ll find one that tops them all. You can enjoy your mulled wine and delicacies on the wide walkways of a treetop path with festive lighting. But even if you’re afraid of heights, you can visit the Christmas market on the forest floor and watch the hustle and bustle on the paths from below.
A 1,000 meter long circular trail

A full 30 meters above the ground is the Waldwipfelweg, which takes you around a kilometer in a circle through the forest. You will learn more about the local bird species and the trees you pass. On the viewing platform, you can enjoy the wonderful view over the Danube valley and as far as the Alps. The bravest of you decide to take the suspension bridge at a junction instead of the normal path on the footbridges. The 2.5 meter wide Waldwipfelweg is suitable for baby carriages and barrier-free.
In addition to a suspension bridge and a viewing platform, there is also a 52-metre-high forest tower on the Waldwipfelweg St. Englmar. You can playfully climb this tower using climbing elements or alternatively use the paths that wind their way upwards. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Return to the bottom via one of the two slides that take you back to the Waldwipfelweg.

The Christmas market on the Waldwipfelweg trail opened on November 21 and invites visitors to an extraordinary Advent adventure every weekend. The actual market is located on the ground between the trees and makes you feel as if you are walking through an enchanted world. The actual Waldwipfelweg and the forest tower are also festively illuminated and from here you can watch the hustle and bustle of the market from above. Between Christmas and New Year, you can also visit the winter market, which is open daily from 12 noon to 6 pm.
In addition to the numerous stalls, which offer everything your heart desires from langos to Baumstriezel, a colorful program for young and old awaits you at the Christmas market on the Waldwipfelweg. Every day, either Santa Claus or the Christ Child will drop by and magician Waltini will delight you with his magical tricks. The Spectaculum fire show will thrill you with its grandiose performances.
As the name suggests, you can experience Christmas upside down at the Haus am Kopf. The house is literally upside down and shows you a twisted Christmas world that you can only reach via the Waldwipfelweg. If that’s not enough illusion for you, you should take the path of optical phenomena and enter the cave of illusions.
The Waldwipfelweg in St. Englmar has many attractions for the whole family, which you can visit all year round. It takes around two hours by car from Munich and you can park for free on site. The Christmas market at the Waldwipfelweg is included in the regular admission price, which also includes the Waldwipfelweg including the nature adventure trail, the path of optical phenomena and the children’s play area. The Haus am Kopf costs €2 extra, a VR sightseeing flight with the Bayernflieger costs €8.
