There are many wonderful places to enjoy the Munich summer —whether above the city’s rooftops at rooftop bars, under the open sky at outdoor dining areas, or under the trees in beer gardens. However, there is one very special location in the heart of the city that attracts numerous guests year after year. The Apollon Stufenbar is open for only a few weeks and, during that time, becomes the ultimate sunset hotspot.
Opera Meets Bar Culture

The Apollon Stufenbar is an initiative of the Bavarian State Opera and opens its doors as part of the opera festival. The concept is incredibly simple: During the festival, the steps of the National Theater on Max-Josef-Platz are transformed into a dining and drinking venue. For a few weeks, the square in front of the opera house becomes a lively summer spot where you can enjoy a sundowner before or after seeing a performance. Or you can simply make plans to meet up after work or for an after-work get-together.
Pick up your drinks at the top of the entrance to the National Theater and then settle down on the steps between the imposing columns. In addition to fine cocktails, wine, and beer, there’s of course a selection of non-alcoholic refreshments. By the way, you can only pay cashless here.
Apollon Stufenbar Program

This year, the Apollon Stufenbar is open from June 24 through July 31. It will be closed only on June 27, as well as on July 4 during “Opera for All.” To celebrate the opening on June 24, you can look forward to beats from DJ Chadee and DJ Chelo, as well as musicians from the Bavarian State Orchestra. This will be followed by three more “Stufennächte” on July 7, 16, and 21, where you can also look forward to free live music and DJ sets.
At the Apollon Stufenbar, you’ll experience Greek flair right in the middle of the city thanks to the theater’s temple-like architecture. Now that Max-Josef-Platz has been completely redesigned, the view is even more beautiful than in previous years. Instead of gray concrete and stone, you’ll now look out onto green lawns. This makes it so much easier to enjoy drinks and music.
