A marina in Munich—it couldn’t be more clichéd. The only reason such a marina doesn’t exist in our city is the lack of access to the sea. But even that hasn’t stopped Sylvenstein Event GmbH, which decided to establish Marina Monaco. This summer, alongside the cultural beach on the Isar and Munich’s rooftop bars, it’s sure to be another hot spot for sunny evenings after work.
A marina as a temporary use
In the north of Schwabing, near Frankfurter Ring, a 5.6-hectare industrial site has lain fallow for years. Now the area finally has a purpose again, at least temporarily. Sylvenstein Event GmbH has teamed up with Hammer AG to create an artificial lake on the site. The so-called Schwabinger Meer will be the heart of the new marina. Boats float on it, surrounded by a sandy beach.
Here you can hop aboard, enjoy your drinks with your feet in the sand, or party on the weekends. The range of recreational activities is set to expand even further over the course of the year. However, the marina won’t be permanent: In the future, the “Die neue Schmiede” urban district is set to be built on the site, where you’ll find hotels, offices, and commercial buildings.
Summer, sun, and sand at Marina Monaco

When the Kulturstrand is packed again and you ’re still craving some beach vibes in Munich , Marina Monaco is the place for you. Unlike at Alte Utting, the boats here are actually in the water, making you feel even more like you’re on vacation. The marina is open to everyone and invites you to relax with a drink while the sun sets over the city. Events are scheduled to take place regularly, with DJs spinning tunes for you.
Marina Monaco will open its doors to you starting in mid-May. Over the course of the year, the offerings are set to expand further and include a padel court. There will also be a bouldering area. The temporary use is currently planned for five years, during which you can visit Marina Monaco from April through October. But even in winter, you likely won’t have to completely do without the “Schwabing Sea” when it’s time for curling and the Christmas market.
