The Munich summer often makes us forget that we call Germany’s most expensive city home. Numerous free events entice visitors with their varied programs. After the Theatron Pentecost Festival gave you a first taste, the Theatron Music Summer is finally kicking off again in August. For three weeks, free concerts await you every evening on the lake stage in the Olympic Park, making this summer just a little more magical.
For over 50 years now
After the Olympic Games ended in 1973, organizers were looking for a new use for the grounds of the Olympic Park. This led to the creation of the Theatron Musiksommer, which has since provided a stage primarily for regional acts. But well-known German bands have also performed at the amphitheater, including Sportfreunde Stiller, Culcha Candela, and the Scorpions.
Since 1982, the Summer Festival in the Olympic Park has been held alongside the Theatron Musiksommer. Back then, it was organized to celebrate the park’s 10th anniversary. Since then, it has held a permanent place in Munich’s event calendar and offers many other highlights alongside rides and food stands. This year, for example, you can look forward to the Water Lantern Festival, which takes place during the second themed weekend . The Musiksommer is the perfect way to round off a day at the festival.
Here’s what to expect at the Theatron Musiksommer
From Friday, July 31, through Friday, August 22, you can look forward to free concerts every day. On most days, several acts will perform for you, so you’ll get your full dose of live music. This year, the lineup will once again feature primarily up-and-coming artists—and who knows, maybe your future favorite musician is among them. A special highlight for classical music fans awaits on August 2, when the Sinfonietta Orchestra takes the stage on the lake. Ten days later, you’ll experience an atmospheric end to the day with fireworks.
Not only is admission free at the Theatron Musiksommer: You can bring your own snacks and drinks, so there’s absolutely no obligation to buy anything. However, there are also food stands on site and, of course, at the summer festival where you can stock up. You can then settle down with your picnic on the steps of the amphitheater or on the surrounding green spaces and enjoy the show.
