If you want to enjoy movies under the starry sky this summer, you’re in luck—you can choose from several great open-air movie theaters. Of course, the Mond & Sterne cinema in Westpark and the cinema at Olympiasee are particularly popular—at both locations, you can watch a wide variety of movies surrounded by greenery with a view of the water. But you’ll soon be able to enjoy the experience in the city center as well, because the open-air cinema at Hofstatt will be opening its doors to you soon.
Open-air cinema in the heart of Munich
The Hofstatt was created from the former building of the Süddeutscher Verlag publishing house. Back when the publishing house was in operation, the building’s inner courtyards were not accessible, but that changed with the opening of the shopping arcade in 2013. Since then, they have been one of the highlights of the arcade and the venue for the Hofstatt Open-Air Cinema. This year marks the 7th time the Hofstatt has hosted the cinema, and it invites you to several movie nights each week throughout August. Due to its great popularity, there will be four screening days per week this year instead of just three, and five films will be shown .
From August 3 to 28, you can look forward to one blockbuster movie every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday—and two on Fridays. The lineup includes both German and international productions, all of which are well-known titles. You can look forward to films such as “The Greatest Showman,” “Life of Pi,” “Zootopia,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Kokowäh,” among others. This ensures a diverse program for both children and adults. You can find the full lineup on the Hofstatt website.
Here’s how to secure your seats

The film selection is impressive enough, but the best part about the open-air cinema at Hofstatt is the price: Admission is free! And as if that weren’t cool enough, you ’ll get a free serving of sweet popcorn with your movie ticket. If you prefer something savory, you can also grab delicious pizza and refreshing drinks at 60 seconds to napoli. Screenings are limited to 50 seats, so be sure to make a reservation in advance.
You can do this easily via Facebook or Instagram by sending a direct message to the Hofstatt’s official accounts. It may take up to a day to process your request, so please be patient. If there are still spots available, the Hofstatt will add you to the guest list, and you can check in at your leisure before the movie starts. If you’re unable to attend after all, please let us know as soon as possible, also via Facebook or Instagram.
