The heat wave continues, and it seems like Munich residents are spending every free minute in the water to cool off. What most of us take for granted can be a real challenge for people who rely on a wheelchair. To ensure that they, too, can take a dip in the cool water given the current temperatures , a special swimming dock has been built at Lußsee, which is now open for use.
Greater Accessibility Thanks to the Swimming Dock
Lußsee is considered Munich’s cleanest swimming lake and is also less crowded than the neighboring Langwieder See. This makes it particularly attractive for a weekend outing if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing day at the lake. To ensure that people with limited mobility can safely access the water, the City of Munich had a swimming pier built at Lußsee . This allows people with disabilities to easily enter the lake and take a refreshing dip.
In this way, the city is promoting greater inclusion by making recreational opportunities accessible to all groups of people. The initiative stems from a 2022 resolution stipulating that a total of five Munich swimming lakes should be made barrier-free . Following Feldmochinger See and Fasaneriesee, Lußsee is now the third in the group.
Additional accessibility measures
The swimming dock isn’t the only new inclusive feature at Lußsee. There are now three additional accessible parking spaces, and the paths have been renovated. In addition, the lake now features an accessible restroom facility, which has also been upgraded. The swimming dock itself offers several places to sit and lie down to relax and rest.
Furthermore, the dock features transfer aids for wheelchair users and several entry and exit points into and out of the lake, giving you a choice of water depths. So from now on, you can look forward to relaxing days at the lake without having to worry about your safety.
