Now that the warmth and good weather have arrived, all many of us can think about is finally escaping the city – getting out into the fresh air, swimming and relaxing at one of the many lakes in Upper Bavaria.
And if they’re not overcrowded, all the better. Well, if you’re willing to go the extra mile – in this case, drive – these 6 lakes offer a tranquil atmosphere that’s definitely worth a day trip.
1st Bibi Lake
Lake Bibi in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen is simply ideal for families. Surrounded by meadows and forests that make up its beautiful landscape, it counts with a water slide, a swimming pontoon, digging spots and even designated barbecue areas.
2nd Fohnsee
Located in the middle of the Osterseen nature reserve and very close to Iffeldorf, Fohnsee combines the beauty of wild nature – white sand, turquoise water, forests with unique plants and animals – with the comfort of a vacation resort, such as a charming restaurant.
3rd Staffelsee
It should suffice to say that painters such as Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky often visited the Staffelsee in search of relaxation. And judging by the idyllic atmosphere, not much has changed since their time. Whether you take a dip in its crystal-clear waters, explore the surrounding nature, hire a boat or visit one of the lovely neighboring villages, it’s really hard not to relax.
4th Kochelsee
Less visited than its big brother, Kochelsee is particularly popular with photographers. And also among hikers. There are several paths and trails around it that lead up to the summit of the foothills of the Alps and offer wonderful motifs. However, if you don’t feel like hiking, you can try out the thermal baths and bathing meadow in Kochel.
5th Weßlinger See
The Weßlinger See is a small, quiet lake in the Fünfseenland region, which warms up quickly and is surrounded by old trees. Perfect for a relaxing swim away from the hustle and bustle! There is a picturesque circular path and a swimming island in the middle of the lake. From Munich Central Station, you can easily get to the lake in just under half an hour on the S8 train.
6th Kirchsee
Kirchsee near Sachsenkam is located right between Lake Starnberg and Lake Tegernsee. It attracts far fewer visitors and is therefore a real insider tip for relaxed days of swimming. There are two swimming areas with jetties here: On the northern shore or on the southern shore towards Reutberg Monastery. The lake is particularly beautiful at dusk.
The lakes in Upper Bavaria are not only an Instagram paradise for nature lovers, but also the perfect playground for adventurers and recreation seekers alike. Whether you want to plunge into the refreshing waters, glide across the glistening water on a stand-up paddleboard or simply enjoy the panorama – there’s something for everyone here. So grab your swimsuit, your camera and your best friends and dive into the ultimate summer adventure at these beautiful lakes in Upper Bavaria.
