Munich is the perfect location for anyone who enjoys being active outdoors in the fresh air. Our city is surrounded by a wealth of sports opportunities in stunning landscapes, making it the perfect starting point for outdoor adventures. If you’re looking for more than just climbing mountains, hiking through gorges, and swimming across lakes, you should take a trip to Spitzingsee. Here , you’ll find a wide range of sports activities that offer something different depending on the season .
Relaxing Summer Days

Spitzingsee is located south of Schliersee and, with an area of 28.3 hectares, is considered one of Bavaria’s largest mountain lakes. It lies at an elevation of 1,048 meters—300 meters higher than Schliersee—which makes it slightly colder. If that doesn’t deter you, it’s a wonderful place to go swimming and take a dip in the summer. You also have the option to rent a boat or a SUP board to explore the lake.
On the lake’s eastern shore lies the town of Spitzingsee, where a beautiful lakeside promenade and several swimming spots await you. You can stroll along the promenade, enjoy the view of the water and the mountain panorama, and stop for a bite to eat at one of the cafés or taverns. Nothing stands in the way of a quiet, relaxing summer day .
Action at Spitzingsee
If that sounds too boring, there are plenty of other ways to experience Spitzingsee. An absolute highlight for thrill-seekers is the mountain carts. From mid-May through October, you can zoom down the Stümpfling on these little vehicles. The carts’ design ensures excellent stability and smooth steering, so nothing stands in the way of your fun. The 3.5-kilometer route takes you at breakneck speed from the mountain station down the slope, with gravity alone powering the vehicles.
If you ’d rather take a leisurely hike instead of a quick drive, keep an eye out for the marble runs at Stümpfling. These are especially exciting for kids and add some variety to your hike as the marbles make their way through the different courses. If you want to take on a challenge yourself, you can go rock climbing at Taubenstein. There are several routes here with varying levels of difficulty that you can tackle.
Spitzingsee Throughout the Year

While swimming, rock climbing, and mountain carting are primarily summer activities, there are many other things to do around Spitzingsee that you can enjoy during other seasons. Hiking is practically always an option, and there are numerous trails you can tackle both along the lake’s shore and in the surrounding mountains. Furthermore, Spitzingsee is also a ski resort where you can ski down both easy and more challenging slopes. If you’re not so keen on skiing, sledding is another option.
Instead of going downhill, cross-country skiing takes you straight ahead. There are two trails that are usually groomed quite early in the year. One is 3 kilometers long, the other 7 kilometers. This gives you the choice between an easy and a moderately difficult route. In winter, Spitzingsee often forms a thick enough layer of ice that you can go ice skating, curling, or play hockey on the frozen lake. With its wealth of activities, Spitzingsee is truly a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts—you’re guaranteed never to get bored.
