The Island in the Red Lake
Schliersee is a mountain lake located in the Miesbach district and is entirely part of the market town of Schliersee. Today, it boasts excellent water quality, but that wasn’t always the case. In the 1970s, the water had a high phosphate content, which led to the formation of burgundy blood algae. As a result, Schliersee took on the color of blood, and swimming was impossible. Today, however, you can jump into the water without hesitation and swim laps.
Schliersee is also home to Wörth Island, an island approximately 2.4 hectares in size that is densely forested. Nestled among these trees is the “Insel im Schliersee” inn, which you can book for private events. The location is particularly popular for weddings, which has earned Wörth the nickname “Wedding Island.” Even Ludwig II was once a guest here. You can reach the island by boat; however , rumor has it that there’s also a secret underground tunnel connecting the island to Wallendeck Castle.
A Day at Schliersee
Even if you’re not getting married anytime soon, you can still spend a lovely day at Schliersee. The town is just under an hour away by train, and there are several swimming spots on-site. Grab a delicious scoop of ice cream at Dillinger and stroll toward the water with it. Right on the shore is a great playground where your kids can run around. Right next to it, motorboats dock to take you on a 45-minute round-trip cruise across Schliersee every hour.
A little further west along the shore, you’ll come to the SUP rental shop. Here, too, you can spread out your towel and go for a swim. If it’s too crowded near the playground, you’ll find more peace and quiet here. In addition, Schliersee is perfect for hiking. To the south lies the town of Neuhaus, from where you can easily reach the Josefsthaler Waterfalls. And if you’re looking for a truly challenging athletic adventure, take part in the annual Alpine Triathlon, which takes place on the shores of Schliersee.
