Spring has arrived in Munich, and with it, several holidays are coming to the city. If you’ve used your vacation days wisely, the coming months mean plenty of days off for you ! And even if you don’t travel far, you can still enjoy this beautiful time right in the Munich area. Nestled in the picturesque countryside are several stunning waterfalls that will leave you in awe. Today we’d like to introduce you to one of them—or rather, several: the Josefsthal Waterfalls!
12-meter-high cascades with a foot bath

Just a stone’s throw from Schliersee, a natural spectacle awaits you that feels like a trip to Costa Rica, but with Bavarian coziness and mountain air. The Josefsthal Waterfalls are just an hour away from Munich. Here, the Hachelbach stream plunges down several tiers into the depths, creating a particularly photogenic backdrop. A visit to the waterfall is especially worthwhile in the spring, when it holds extra water after the snowmelt.
The main fall stands a proud 12 meters tall and forms the centerpiece of an enchanted forest. Below the falls, small pools—water basins—form. They are so clear that you can count the pebbles at the bottom. Perfect for an ice-cold foot bath that puts any Kneipp basin to shame.
Hike through an enchanted forest

The Josefsthal Waterfalls are especially recommended if you’re not a hiking enthusiast. That’s because they’re easier to reach than most other places: From the hiking parking lot in Josefsthal, it takes only about 10–15 minutes to reach the main waterfall. The trail leads over moss-covered rocks and under dense tree canopies. A perfect hike for families with young children!
But even if you have more energy and want to venture further into nature, the surrounding area offers plenty of options. A loop trail via the Stockeralm takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and rewards you with a beautiful view of Schliersee.
