Shooting a few hoops or kicking a ball back and forth after school or work—for many, it’s the perfect way to unwind after a long day. There are several basketball hoops and soccer fields around the city that you can use for free, such as along the Stadtbach, on the Isar, or in Grünwaldpark. But none of them is as unique as the rooftop sports field above the Bellvue di Monaco. Located 21 meters above the ground, it not only offers you space to exercise but also a fantastic view.
Saved from demolition
The Bellvue di Monaco is a social housing and cultural project located on Müllerstraße. The building was originally slated for demolition to make way for a new structure, but following protests and support from prominent figures—including the band Sportfreunde Stiller—it was spared, and the Bellvue took it on lease. Now that the renovation work is complete, it features 40 apartments, a café on the ground floor —and a sports field on the roof.
The idea behind Kurt-Landauer-Platz—as the rooftop sports field is actually called—was to create a public space in the city. And since ground-level space is limited, they made use of the roof instead—similar to what’s been done in the Werksviertel, only more centrally located. The field was named after the former president of FC Bayern Munich, who went into exile. The club had provided financial support for the construction of the field, and several players have already visited it, including Manuel Neuer and Bastian Schweinsteiger. The rooftop sports field celebrated its opening in 2020 but had to close again immediately due to the pandemic. It didn’t resume operations until a year and a half later and has enjoyed great popularity ever since.
Here’s how to use the rooftop sports area

At a height of 21 meters, you’ll find basketball hoops and soccer goals spread across 117 square meters. It’s surrounded by a steel mesh fence, the same kind used to build cages for wild animals. During the day, you’ll enjoy a fantastic panoramic view; after sunset, fluorescent lights create a cool atmosphere. Use of the rooftop sports field is completely free. All you have to do is reserve a time slot in advance. To do so, send an email to bellevue-dachsportplatz@buntkicktgut.de or give them a call. You’ll then be assigned a one-hour slot for up to 20 people at an available time.
However, you’ll need to plan ahead, as the rooftop sports area is very popular and books up quickly. The club’s booking calendar also shows when the space is available. You can book a slot Monday through Friday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and on weekends between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. And after your workout, you can grab a bite to eat at the café on the ground floor.
🕑 Hours: Monday through Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
