It is not unusual for footballers to pursue other businesses outside of sport, as the example of Thomas Müller and his horse breeding business shows. His former team-mate Manuel Neuer, for example, ventured into the restaurant and hotel business last year. However, his inn is currently not doing well.
Extensive renovation work

The picturesque mountain valley with stream near Lake Schliersee was mentioned as a wideppe as early as the 11th century. In 1504, there was a hermitage here that made it possible to cut and transport the wood from the valley. 35 years later , the Scheyern monastery founded the Alpe Valepp, which was the first to use the area’s current name. During the Nazi era, prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp were forced to work on the alp.
In the 19th century, the Salinenamt Bad Reichenhall finally had the inn built, of which Manuel Neuer is now the tenant. For a long time, the hut served as a refreshment stop for hikers before it was renovated in 2011. Nothing happened for a long time until it was finally closed five years later. The Bavarian State Forests, the owners of the building, struggled for a long time to find a new tenant. The remote location of the mountain hut put many people off, as no guests were to be expected in bad weather.
In 2022, Manuel Neuer came on the scene and took over the lease together with restaurateur and hotelier Johannes Rabl. Together, they had the entire hut renovated and were awarded the Miesbach district’s monument protection prize. They are said to have spent 6 million euros on the renovations. The Forsthaus Valepp finally reopened on Ascension Day and began operating again.
Massive water damage in Forsthaus Valepp
Then came the shock at the end of August this year: water damage forced the inn to take a break just over a year after reopening. The cause was a faulty shower mixer. The Forsthaus is actually open from May 1 to December 31, but is currently still closed due to the renovation work that needs to be carried out again. There was talk of reopening at the end of October, and the guest rooms will be bookable again from November. The repair of the damage is expected to cost several hundred thousand euros.
At the opening, the Alm’s prices initially caused a stir. Many felt they were overpriced. You pay €9.80 for a beer, €29.50 for a Wiener Schnitzel and €17.50 for a Kaiserschmarn. An overnight stay in one of the 12 rooms starts at 159€. If neither that nor the remote location of the hut puts you off, then you can pay a visit to Forsthaus Valepp on a hike in the Mangfallgebirge mountains. When the weather is nice, you can sit outside in the beer garden, otherwise you can sit in the Stubn.
