Instead of white sausage and pretzels, you can currently sample matjes herring and shrimp at the Hamburg Fish Market. For a taste of authentic northern German atmosphere, you don’t need to book a trip to the metropolis—just stop by Wittelsbacherplatz instead. Here, an authentic market experience awaits you, featuring maritime specialties and live music.
The North Visits the South
The Hamburg Fish Market is a true institution that has been around for more than 300 years. A visit to the legendary market criers is an absolute must for visitors to Hamburg. But so that even those who can’t make it to northern Germany can get a sense of the unique atmosphere, the Hamburg Fish Market has been going on tour for 27 years now.
This year , it will be in Munich from May 14 to 25, transforming Wittelsbacherplatz into a maritime experience for 12 days. After that, it will move on to make stops in Stuttgart, Offenburg, and Rottenburg, among other places.
Fish and Fun at the Market

Just in time for Father’s Day, the Hamburg Fish Market has opened in the city center and has been offering North German specialties ever since. Try fried fish, matjes herring, flambéed salmon, North Sea shrimp, fish sandwiches, and various salads, and wash it all down with beer or wine. For the full experience, it’s best to enjoy the food right there on the spot, but you can also take it to go. Afterward, catch the stage show, where mermaid Nathalie Tineo sets the mood andsea dog Hannes Kröger strikes up some sea shanties. Even more live music and maritime vibes await you on Pentecost.
The Hamburg Fish Market is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Sundays and holidays, it opens at 11 a.m. The easiest way to reach the market is by public transit: take the U3, U6, U4, or U5 and get off at Odeonsplatz. Alternatively, take bus 100 to Brienner Straße or Odeonsplatz. Or hop on one of the brand-new rental bikes from MyRadl, which recently celebrated their launch.
