They still exist: affordable dining spots in Munich. You don’t find them all that often, but places like Gebrüder Keller & Erbe or Café Kosmos offer budget-friendly alternatives to the city’s chic rooftop terraces and bars. The owner of the latter is launching a new project this year where you can also enjoy a meal at low prices. The Buchberg in the Old Botanical Garden is the successor to Null, but it comes with a slightly modified concept.
A structure made of chairlifts and wooden panels
“The Bucheberg is a pretty wild structure,” says operator Florian Schönhofer himself in an interview with the tz. It consists of two wooden platforms, one on the ground and one elevated among the trees. Both are connected by a walkway. The platform’s steel supports come from a chairlift on the Buchberg in the Bad Tölzer Land region, hence the name of the venue. It now stands proudly above Karl-Stützel-Platz in the Old Botanical Garden near the main train station.
The Buchberg is the successor to the Null, which was previously located here. That venue had also been launched by Florian together with David Boppert from Münchner Kultur GmbH. The name already hinted at the concept: here, guests could only purchase non-alcoholic beverages. Things are a bit different at the Buchberg. At the kiosk, located beneath the high outdoor seating area, alcohol is also available for purchase. However, you can only consume it on-site if you settle in at the Buchberg. If you’d like to take something with you, it must be non-alcoholic.
The Buchberg: Outdoor seating with no obligation to buy

Just like at Café Kosmos and the associated Kosmos unter Null beer garden, which Florian also runs, the prices at Buchberg are more than fair. You can get a beer for €2.40 and a cappuccino for €2.80. In addition, there are other drinks, such as wine, sodas, and spritzers, as well as small snacks to satisfy your hunger. In winter, you can look forward to mulled wine, as the Bucheberg will be open year-round.
Plus, you can stop by even if you don’t want to buy a drink. There’s no pressure to buy anything at Buchberg—it’s meant to be a place for everyone. Here you can get together, meet up with loved ones, or meet new people, no matter your budget. In addition to drinks and snacks, there will be regular events and live music. The project is currently set to run for four years, so you’ll be able to enjoy the Bucheberg for quite a while. It celebrated its official opening on Friday, May 8, and is now open for you from noon to 11 p.m.
