On January 17, the European Film Awards ceremony will take place in Berlin, honoring the works and work of European filmmakers. True cineastes don’t have to hold back their celebratory mood until the actual ceremony, however, because the award season has already begun. To get you in the mood, cinemas across Europe are showing special programs in the weeks leading up to the awards ceremony. Several German cinemas are represented as partners, including one in Munich. So get ready for a cozy evening at the movies and celebrate the Awards Swason!
An award to save European film

The European Film Awards will be presented for the 38th time in early 2026. The European Film Awards have been held since 1988 and were a counter-reaction to the growing irrelevance of European film in the 1980s. The award, then still called “Felix”, was intended to counteract this loss of significance. The trophy depicts a silver woman wearing a dress decorated with European stars. It is awarded every second year in Berlin; in the other years in between, the prize travels around and the ceremony takes place in different cities in Europe, such as Paris, London, Warsaw or Riga.
The European Film Academy has nominated films and creatives in a total of 22 categories that now have a chance of winning the coveted trophy. These categories include best director, best actress, best costume design, best documentary and, of course, best film. Until the actual presentation of the European Film Awards takes place, cinemas throughout Europe celebrate the award season. In addition, cities from other continents are also taking part for the first time this year to celebrate European film: Hong Kong, Santiago de Chile, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
A total of 151 cinemas from 47 countries will be represented during the Awards Season of the European Film Awards. In Germany, the cities of Berlin, Cologne, Halle, Hamburg, Potsdam, Saarbrücken and of course Munich are taking part. In each of these cities, one cinema is part of the Award Season; in Munich it is the Monopol in Schwabing West at Schleißheimerstr. 127.

The Monopol has been around since 2025 and is part of the Neo Kinos together with the Arena Filmtheater, the Rio Filmpalast, the Neues Maxim and the Lichtspielhaus in Fürstenfeldbruck. These provide you with a carefully curated program of current blockbusters, art house productions, documentaries and children’s films.
As part of the European Film Awards, Monopol will be showing some of the nominated films, exclusive previews and other European film highlights. You can look forward to these gems in the coming weeks:
- A Simple Accident (Preview)
- The Worst Person in the World
- Little Trouble Girls (Preview)
- Victoria
- Sentimental Value (Nominated)
- Bugonia (Nominated)
- Die my Love (Nominated)
You can watch all films in the original version with subtitles. The Monopol is also worth a visit outside of the European Film Awards. You can watch mainstream and independent films here in a total of four screens, both current and older, mostly in the original language. A special highlight is the cinema bar, which exudes a living room atmosphere with its small tables with lamps in the seats and a stool to put your feet up. You can also rent it on request, including the bar in the hall that gives it its name.
