From the outside, it looks like a somewhat aging movie theater. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned from so many movie trailers, it’s that appearances can be deceiving. And the Monopol Kino is no exception in that regard. Its four screens show documentaries and arthouse films daily, many of them from abroad. And unlike regular movie theaters, there’s neither popcorn nor commercials here. What you will find, though , is the great cinema bar, where you can enjoy a caipirinha while watching a movie . Werkstattkino
It’s common knowledge that Glockenbach hides quite a few treasures. The most hidden of them all is probably the Werkstattkino, since it’s located in the basement of a tavern’s backyard. In a single 46-seat auditorium, the films selected by the members of the association that runs the cinema are screened. The program changes weekly and can cover almost any genre: Westerns, documentaries, horror… There are plenty of cinematic gems here just waiting for you to discover them!
New Maxim
Although it’s small—just two screens—and only shows independent films, it’s surprising that Munich’s third-oldest movie theater isn’t much better attended. Still, maybe it’s for the best. Because the Neues Maxim has a unique, family-friendly atmosphere: there are always children’s films and events on the schedule, and the “living room theater” features beanbag chairs instead of just regular chairs. On top of that, filmmakers and actors sometimes even come by to discuss their work. An absolute dream for any movie buff.
Arena Filmtheater
Like the Monopol and the Neues Maxim, the Arena Filmtheater belongs to the Neo Kinos group and , as such, is also one of Munich’s alternative cinemas. Here, arthouse films, independent productions, foreign gems, and old classics alike flicker across the screen. While Theater 2 meets modern standards, Theater 1 and the lobby still retain the charm of the 1920s . With the “Match me, if you can” dating event, you also have the opportunity to meet other movie lovers outside of the usual apps.
City Cinemas
Right on Sonnenstraße, yet somewhat tucked away in a courtyard, you’ll discover the City Kinos. These are spread across several parts of the building, so you’ll have to cross the courtyard to get from the snack bar to the theater . The courtyard itself is a great place to linger before or after the show, which is especially atmospheric in the spring and summer. In addition to mainstream productions, the lineup includes quite a few hidden gems that you’d miss at other theaters . It also regularly hosts exclusive premieres.
Munich’s oldest movie theater is also one of the most unusual. Since 1977, the Museum Lichtspiele has screened *The Rocky Horror Picture Show* every week, a feat that even earned the theater a world record. The auditorium is decorated to match the film, and at the box office you can pick up special participation kits that provide you with the necessary props .
