Munich has a wide variety of outdoor pools where you can cool off on hot summer days. From natural swimming spots to classic swimming pools, there’s something for everyone, so everyone can find the perfect spot for themselves. Yet hardly any of these pools offer as wide a range of amenities as the Dantebad—here , you’ll find absolutely everything you could possibly want. What’s more, nowhere else can you swim for as long as you can here—and do so outdoors all year round.
Swimming and Bathing in Every Style
The Dantebad first opened as a men’s pool in 1913 in Gern, before being made accessible to the entire population in 1920. During the 1972 Summer Olympics, it served as the venue for the water polo competitions, for which the grandstand was built. It still stands today and is a popular spot for soaking up the sun. In the 2000s, the city gradually expanded and renovated the Dantebad until it took on its current form. Today, it is divided into two areas: the outdoor pool area and the stadium.
Today, the Dantebad features a total of five swimming pools and one wading pool. The stadium houses a 50-meter pool as well as the attraction pool, where you can let yourself drift through the whirlpool or relax on the bubble loungers. In the outdoor pool area, there’s another 50-meter pool as well as the non-swimmers’ pool. In the nudist area, you can not only strip down on the sunbathing lawn but also enter the water just as God made you. Here, you have 25 meters available for nude swimming. The youngest visitors, meanwhile, can have fun in the splash paradise.
Open-air swimming in sub-zero temperatures
Together with the Schyrenbad, the Dantebad kicks off the outdoor swimming season earlier than any other pool every year. But you don’t have to wait until the season starts, because the facility is open to you all year round. The 50-meter pool has a water temperature of 30°C; the wellness and attraction pool is even warmer at 34°C. When it gets dark early or maybe even snows while you’re warming up in the warm water, a particularly romantic atmosphere sets in. If you still feel too cold, visit the sauna area after your swim.
But even in the summer, you can still swim at the Dantebad after dark. The pool is open daily until 11 p.m., with floodlights ensuring good visibility. Conversely, you can also start your laps here as early as 7:30 a.m. If you’d rather work up a sweat on land instead of in the water, visit the fitness room or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. Kids can run around on the playground or whiz down the Breitwasser slide. To satisfy your hunger, there’s a kiosk with a beer garden on site, as well as the Hechtsprung restaurant. The latter is also open in winter, when the Dantebad becomes a heated outdoor pool.
