Swimming like in a lake: That’s the promise of natural swimming spots like Maria Einsiedel. For 16 years, it was the only one of its kind in Munich, and thanks to its charming location in the Isar floodplains and the 400-meter-long Mühlbach canal , it remains very popular. But if Thalkirchen is too far away for you and you still want to enjoy a natural swimming pool, you’ve been able to do so at the Georgenschwaige since 2025. Here, a chlorine-free swimming experience awaits visitors of all ages.
The Transition to a Natural Swimming Area
Georgenschwaige has been around since 1934 and opened back then as a regular swimming pool at Riesenfeld. Just two years later, it was equipped with a diving tower and a swimming pool. It owes its name to the former cattle yard of Schäftlarn Abbey, a “Schwaige” named St. Georgenschwaige after St. George. This Schwaige later became what is now Milbertshofen, and the swimming facility still commemorates it with its name today.
In 2021, a major fire broke out at Georgenschwaige, causing the pool to remain closed for the time being. This was followed in the summer of 2023 by a complete renovation that transformed the outdoor pool into a natural swimming area. Last year, Georgenschwaige finally opened as Munich’s second natural swimming area, where the water is treated without chlorine. The water is purified microbiologically in a reed bed area in the southern part of the pool. A heat pump and a photovoltaic system are also used, ensuring that the entire process is environmentally friendly.
Swimming fun at Georgenschwaige
The new natural swimming area features a total of three pools that offer everything your heart desires. In the swimmers’ pool, you can swim laps in a 50-meter lane at a water temperature of 22°Cand really work up a sweat. The non-swimmers’ area, on the other hand, has a gentle slope leading down to a sandy shore that gives you that authentic beach feeling.
The little ones, meanwhile, will love the wading pool with fountains and water features, as well as a small slide. The older visitors can enjoy some thrills on the wide-water slide. If you want to relax a bit after swimming and splashing around, you can do so on the spacious sunbathing lawn, where the mature trees provide shade. There’s a separate play area for children, and snacks are available at the kiosk.
