The outdoor swimming season is currently in full swing , and anyone looking to cool off on hot summer days has plenty of options to choose from in Munich. Among the 10 best pools in Germany is Munich’s Schyrenbad, which ranks 9th. So if you want to swim at one of the best outdoor pools in the country, you’ll have the chance to do so this summer.
Swimming fun since 1847
The Schyrenbad in Untergiesing opened its doors in 1847 as a men-only pool . Women, on the other hand, had to wait nearly a century for admission: it wasn’t until 1938 that they, too, were allowed to enjoy the cool waters in Untergiesing. In the past, the pools were fed by the Freibadbächl, a stream that carried water directly from the Isar into the Schyrenbad. If you’re looking for an outdoor pool with water from the Isar today, the Maria Einsiedel is the place to go.
In the early 1970s, the pool was renovated to serve as a training facility for athletes competing in the Summer Olympics . In 2006, a complete renovation took place, transforming the Schyrenbad into an attractive summer destination. Here, you can also take a dip as early as 7 a.m. on weekdays, making it perfect for the early-morning swimmers among you.

At the Schyrenbad, you’ll find everything you could want in a swimming pool. Thanks to its central location near the Rosengarten , it’s the only outdoor pool in the city located close to the city center. On the spacious sunbathing lawn , you can find a shady spot under the old trees or soak up the sun. If you’d rather not sit on the ground, you can rent a lounge chair on-site for €5. The Schyrenbad features a 50-meter-long swimming lane, a non-swimmer area, and a splash zone for kids. The wide water slide by the non-swimmer pool provides plenty of excitement, while the bubble loungers are perfect for relaxation.
There’s also more than enough to do away from the water. A playground delights the little ones, while the grown-ups can enjoy table tennis or giant chess. If you get hungry, stop by the kiosk withits self-service beer garden, where you can, of course, enjoy the classic outdoor pool fries. Cold drinks and popsicles are perfect for cooling off. The Schyrenbad truly offers you the perfect outdoor swimming experience and, along with the Dantebad, is also the first to open for the season each year. Like all other municipal pools, you can visit it with an Urban Sport Club or Wellpass membership, so there are no additional costs. For everyone else, there are e-tickets, tickets available on-site, or the M-Net pool pass.
