There are three main things about winter in Munich: the wonderful Christmas markets, ice skating and – of course – curling! The “curling for everyone” (and every woman) even originates from southern Germany to Austria. This traditional sport is therefore a must for every Munich resident. And curling in the Royal Hirschgarten is particularly popular: In the largest beer garden in the city – and even the whole world! – there are up to nine natural ice rinks at your disposal.

In case you didn’t already know: The aim of curling is to push your own curling sticks as close as possible to a target object, known as a stave. The stave is placed about 25 meters away from the playing area. Two teams of usually four people compete against each other.
Tactics are crucial here. You can not only place (“lay”) your own sticks, but also shoot away (“shoot”) your opponent’s sticks or move the stave itself to redefine the target area.
The basic rules are quickly explained and no special physical fitness or previous knowledge is required. This also explains the popularity of the sport: anyone can join in, young or old.
From beer garden to winter sports center

Curling in the Royal Hirschgarten has a long tradition. The beer garden area at Hirschgartenallee 1 has become a popular winter meeting place for Munich locals. You can play here from mid-November until February or even March.
A lane can be rented for an hour and costs 38 euros per lane and hour (for up to ten people) – relatively cheap. You will also have to pay a rental fee of around 5 euros per ice stock.
The atmosphere in the Königlicher Hirschgarten is particularly cozy: you are served hot and cold drinks and simple meals directly at the rinks. Simply order using a so-called “ice rink card”. Wood-burning stoves are available to warm you up.
And if you get bored of curling, switch to ice skating: Because there is also a separate ice rink in the Hirschgarten ! It’s best to reserve your spot directly via the website.
