The Christmas markets near Kaltenberg and at Guteneck Castle are impressive with their majestic backdrop, but cost an entrance fee and are not necessarily easy to reach by public transport. If you still don’t want to miss out on a majestic Christmas experience, you should plan a trip to Regensburg and visit the market at St. Emmeram Castle.
A truly princely experience
The famous noble family Thurn und Taxis, who founded the European postal system, once lived at St. Emmeram. Today you can visit the palace’s state rooms and stroll through the palace park. In the run-up to Christmas, it is transformed into a romantic Christmas village with a magnificent Christmas tree in the middle. Visit the Christmas market at Thurn und Taxis for a royal Advent adventure.
Enjoy the regional delicacies, such as the Regensburger Knackersemmel or an Upper Palatinate soup in a loaf of bread, while you warm yourself by one of the open fires. Vegans also get their money’s worth, of course. There are also various types of mulled wine, such as “Lehnsherr”, “Fürstenkelch” or “Feenzauber”. Once you’ve warmed up, head to the arts and crafts village in front of the south and east wings and browse through the guilds’ displays. Or take a stroll through the princely palace park, which is always open from Thursdays to Sundays. A special feature at Christmas time is the Davidhof, which is only open to the public during the Thurn und Taxis Christmas market.
A colorful program for young and old

Children are also well catered for at the Thurn und Taxis Christmas market. In the children’s enchanted forest, the youngest market visitors can ride the steam locomotive and the nostalgic Ferris wheel or go on the swing boat. The Punch and Judy show entertains with its heart-warming stories and you can make your last Christmas presents in the mosaic workshop. Last but not least, you should always visit the princely Christ Child on Sundays between 4 and 4:30 pm and hand in your wish list.
However, if you are unable to meet the Christ Child in person, drop your mail in the letterbox under the magnificent balcony in the inner courtyard. If you leave your address, you are sure to receive a reply. Apart from the Christ Child, there are other program items at the Christmas market at Thurn und Taxis. You can look forward to a variety of musical performances, for example from the hunting horn players or the Bavarian band. Walking acts impress with their skills on stilts and the themed evenings, such as the Night of Lights, enchant with their glitter.
You can easily reach the Thurn und Taxis Christmas market from Munich by taking the RE2 towards Regensburg main station. The train journey takes around 90 minutes and no changes are necessary. If you have the Deutschlandticket, there are no additional costs. Trains run at least every two hours in both directions. From Regensburg main station it is only a few minutes’ walk to the Thurn und Taxis Christmas market.
