What would Munich be without its food? Bavarian classics can be found in many places in our city. Freshly brewed beer in the many breweries or beer gardens, the best doughnuts in these bakeries. And there is also a clear address for lard noodles: Café Frischhut is a firm institution in the heart of Munich’s old town. It is so famous for its specialty that many locals only know it as “Schmalznudel”. But it also has a few other delicacies to offer.
The specialty: lard noodles and pastries

Located right next to the Viktualienmarkt, Café Frischhut offers its authentic Bavarian specialties for residents and visitors alike. The Schmalznudel – also known as “Auszogne” – is a must-try here. The yeast pastry is freshly baked in hot fat before your very eyes.
And it looks just like a Schmalznudel should. Crispy and golden brown on the outside, fluffy on the inside. It is served hot, sprinkled with powdered sugar. The quality of Café Frischhut is known far beyond Munich’s borders.
Even though most people come here for the famous Schmalznudel, the café also offers other specialties related to lard pastries. These include Striezel, Rohrnudeln and Krapfen.
The institution: tradition and atmosphere

As befits a traditional business, Café Frischhut also has a long family history. It has been run by the Frischhut family since 1973, with the tradition of the location dating back to 1905. The owners place great value on the best regional ingredients.
Their Café Frischhut is definitely a “Munich original”. For a long time, it was known for opening in the early hours of the morning. Two worlds came together: the last partygoers and the first market people came here for breakfast and a coffee.
Today, the café is open daily from 8:00 to 18:00, except on Sundays. It is located at Prälat-Zistl-Straße 8 and offers a rustic, nostalgic ambience with wooden décor. You can either enjoy the delicacies on the spot or order them to take away. If you want to avoid a wait, it’s best to book directly. It won’t be busy – Café Frischhut is usually well frequented.
