Munich is often praised for its excellent cuisine. Even more so because the state capital is a melting pot of the best international cuisine. And once again the rumor proves to be true. At least when it comes to the most famous Italian dish: pizza. We introduce you to the best pizza in Munich!
That’s right, Munich can actually boast of having two of the best pizzerias in the whole of Europe. Namely the restaurants Calvello’s in Maxvorstadt and 60 Secondi Pizza Napoletana in Schwabing. And we’re not saying that, an established Italian gastronomy guide says so.
Ranking of the best European pizzas
To be precise, the 60 Secondi Pizza Napoletana and the Calvello are part of the list of the “50 best pizzas in Europe 2024” compiled by 50TopPizza, a “guide to the best pizzerias in the world“. Every year, this Italian company publishes a ranking of the best pizzerias in Italy, the world and, of course, Europe.
But what are the requirements to rate this Italian classic? The inspectors from 50TopPizza check every restaurant they visit in up to seven different categories:
- The pizza: the inspectors assess the combination of ingredients with almost as much attention to their quality and origin – regardless of the style of the pizzeria.
- The service: from typical aspects such as politeness to the qualification and ability to explain the different pizzas and wines.
- The ambience: In this category, the design is actually second only to the hygiene and well-designed premises of the restaurant.
- Waiting time: As the inspectors of 50TopPizza wait in line like any other normal customer, the waiting time until they are served or get a table is also evaluated.
- Wine: The preference is for local and regional wines and original wine lists.
- Beer: The same principles apply to wines and craft beers.
- Drinks: Although less common in a pizzeria, mixed drinks are also considered.
60 Secondi: Pizza in the southern Italian tradition
The high praise for these two restaurants comes, as you would expect, primarily from the excellent pizzas served there: in both cases prepared according to the centuries-old Neapolitan tradition. This is especially true of the 60 Secondi Pizza Napoletana, which stands for the time a pizza needs to bake: The dough must rise for at least 48 hours and the pizzas are baked at a temperature of 500 degrees for a maximum of 60 seconds.
In addition, most of the ingredients are imported from the south of Italy. All in all, 60 Secondi offers a wide selection of great pizzas that will “delight you with their softness and melt-in-the-mouth texture.” No wonder the restaurant falls into the “best pizza in Munich” category.

Calvello: recipe according to family tradition
For its part, Calvello also serves traditional southern Italian dishes that make Italians feel at home. Only fresh ingredients are used to “guarantee unique and authentic flavors”. The restaurant is family-run and managed by the Calvello brothers.
Their recipe, a pizza made only with natural yeast, has been passed down for generations, ensuring a unique taste experience. Or to put the secret of their success in their own words: “Dough and products left to rest for 72 hours to offer the best and lightest pizza ever“. Have fun feasting on the best pizza in Munich!
