The pre-Christmas season is fast approaching, and with it, the Christmas market season will soon begin again. Over the coming weeks, markets will gradually open throughout Munich, transforming the city into a winter wonderland. In addition to familiar favorites, you can also look forward to something new, like the Winterhof at the Kaiserburg. Where Munich’s nobility once resided, you can enjoy punch and try your hand at curling this year.
Imperial Setting

Christmas Market at the Alter Hof—isn’t that the Winterquartier? If that’s what you’re thinking right now, you’re not entirely wrong. The Winterquartier is also located in the inner courtyard of the Kaiserburg and takes place alongside the new Winterhof. In fact, the imperial residence where Ludwig of Bavaria grew up and lived has two inner courtyards connected by a passageway. The Winterhof takes place in the larger of the two, where the Affentürmchen is located. Legend has it that a monkey once climbed this striking brown wooden bay window with baby Ludwig in its arms—hence the name.
This year, you can look forward to the new winter market both in the castle’s halls and outside in the courtyard, where you can soak up the cozy atmosphere. As early as mid-November, you can enjoy this new festive gathering spot, which invites you to savor hot drinks and delicious treats. If you can’t wait that long, the neighboring Winterquartier opens its doors on November 5.
Here’s what awaits you at the Winterhof
From November 16 to December 22, you can make yourself comfortable in the Winterhof daily from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. with free admission. In addition to mulled wine and punch, there are also several Franconian wines for you to enjoy. Seasonal cuisine is also on the menu, with options available for vegetarians and vegans. If food and drink alone aren’t enough to warm you up, you can get a little exercise by trying your hand at curling.
Just like the Winterquartier, you can rent the Winterhof for your Christmas party or other events. The 100 m² alpine hut, as well as the Burgsaal, the Hofsaal, and the wine bar, are available as indoor spaces in case the weather outside turns unpleasant. In addition, every Thursday starting at 5 p.m., an after-work event with laid-back beats awaits you at the end of the workday. If you’re in the mood this winter for a new Christmas-themed after-work hangout against a royal backdrop, then the Winterhof is the perfect spot for you.
