The Werksviertel Mitte district near Ostbahnhof is getting a new cultural space. The SONDER project is moving into the former factory halls. The site has a long history: where potatoes were once processed and later the Kunstpark Ost and the Kultfabrik shaped Munich’s nightlife, a historic site is now being brought back to life. The 13-meter-high industrial hall, formerly known as the WERK7 Theater, is currently undergoing extensive renovation. Behind the concept are the creators of the former DNA Club, who—together with new partners—aim to create a space that goes far beyond a traditional club concept. On a site with room for around 1,500 guests, a new hub for electronic music and contemporary culture is set to emerge.
Not Just Techno: Concerts, Art, and the Vision Behind SONDER
The musical lineup is deliberately not limited to a single genre. In addition to regular club nights, the program features concerts, art exhibitions, and listening sessions. The name is derived from a term coined by author John Koenig. It describes the realization that every person leads a life just as complex as one’s own. It is precisely this sense of community and shift in perspective that is meant to be felt on the dance floor. For the technical and architectural implementation, the team is collaborating with ARTEK Studios and DESIGN LIGA. The offerings are complemented by an on-site bar, an outdoor area, and a health and well-being concept.
Test first, then party: That’s the roadmap leading up to the opening

Until its official launch, the project is intentionally undergoing a test phase. The team is using sporadic events to test various formats, sound systems, and spatial concepts directly with the audience. The insights gained from these evenings are being incorporated directly into the final design of the main hall. The grand, final opening is scheduled for late January 2027. Anyone who wants to follow the development of this new cultural space can find updates and event announcements directly on the official website or via the project’s Instagram channel. Especially in light of the ongoing decline of clubs in Munich, all residents of the city have reason to look forward to this opening.
