Hiking is undoubtedly one of the most popular hobbies among Munich residents. And fortunately, from the Bavarian capital, it’s not far to the nearest attractive hiking trail. Whether you’re heading for high peaks or through deep gorges, whether you’re a beginner or a pro, there’s a suitable route for everyone. The Wolfsschlucht near Wildbad Kreuth offers a little bit of everything and caters to different needs depending on the section.
Mountains and valleys
The Wolfsschlucht is located in the Mangfall Mountains south of Lake Tegernsee, near the village of Kreuth. It stretches over two kilometers and runs as a mostly flat, wide valley. The Felsweißach stream bubbles through the Wolfsschlucht , later flowing into the Hofbauernweißach and forming many pools along the way. The trail on the plain is very varied thanks to the waterways and the towering mountains, and even children can easily manage it.
In the northeast, the wide valley then transforms into a wild, deeply carved rocky gorge that truly lives up to its name. At the end of the gorge, you’ll face an ascent either up to the Schildenstein or the Halserspitze. From here on, the trail becomes significantly more challenging, and only experienced hikers with a head for heights and sure-footedness should attempt it.
The Big and Small Wolfsschlucht
In the southeastern part of the main valley of the Wolfsschlucht, you’ll find a side trail also known as the “Little Wolfsschlucht.” At its end, you’ll find a waterfall that plunges 40 meters down the rocks, creating a spectacular sight. Be sure to take this little detour if you’re hiking here. The main valley, in turn, forms the “Great Wolffschlucht,” where you ’ll also encounter a waterfall.
If you want to hike through the valley, it’s best to choose the Siebenhütten hiking parking lot as the starting point for your tour. There is also a restaurant here where you can stop for a bite to eat after your hike and round off the trip in style.
