Winter in Munich can feel long. But that’s no reason to hide away in your own four walls. Bavaria offers some of the most picturesque destinations, which not only offer stunning nature but also genuine moments of well-being. Even in the cold season, we can quickly warm up outside. We’re not just talking about wellness offers at Walchensee, but also about what is probably the most unusual sauna in Bavaria! The Monte Mare Seesauna on Lake Tegernsee perfectly combines the Bavarian love of nature with modern wellness.
Sweating in a real ship
The Monte Mare Seesauna is much more than just a thermal bath. It is actually a sauna ship called “Irmingard.” It was once a 17-meter-long training ship from 1925 that used to train captains on Lake Chiemsee.
The 15-ton ship was brought to the facility’s “sauna harbor” in August 2008 and lovingly converted. Whereas captains used to sweat on the water during their training, today they do so in a much more relaxed manner. The gentle waves of Lake Tegernsee keep the firmly moored ship in constant motion. After a sauna session in the stern at approx. 85 degrees, you can move on to the bow of the ship, the former “captain’s cabin.” Today, this is a stylish relaxation area.
A quick dip in the cool – and cold – water

What makes the lake sauna at Lake Tegernsee so special is its direct access to the lake. Because the experience doesn’t end at the shore: after a hot infusion, there’s no better way to cool off than with a dip in the crystal-clear, cold water of Lake Tegernsee – a privilege that can hardly be experienced so intensely anywhere else.
The Monte Mare lake sauna on Lake Tegernsee also offers special events such as Scandinavian evenings or a “trip around the world.” And there’s plenty more to keep you entertained: dining areas, massages, a fireplace lounge, a cold plunge pool, and a whirlpool await you . It’s best to reserve your relaxation day online in advance so you can travel from Munich without any stress.
In addition to the sauna ship, there are four other individual saunas, including the Swiss stone pine sauna (the “Queen of the Alps”), which has a calming effect, and the reed sauna, which offers a fantastic panoramic view over the water. You can also enjoy the beautiful view from the loungers in the relaxation area – relax with a view over Lake Tegernsee to the peaks of the surrounding mountains. What more could you need for the perfect wellness day?
