Summer brings not only heat to Munich but also numerous open-air events with cultural programs. An annual highlight is TUM’s TUNIX Festival, which draws you to Königsplatz with its free offerings. In addition to free concerts, it has several other attractions in store, as well as food and drinks at student prices. This year, you can once again look forward to five days of numerous concerts and other highlights.
A Student Festival with a Rich History
The TUM Student Council has been organizing the festival since 1981; initially, it was held in cooperation with the Department of Cultural Affairs. Starting in 1988, the Student Council finally took over the organization entirely, giving rise to the name TUNIX. Together with the StuStaCulum and the LMU Summer Festival, TUNIX forms the “Triple Live Summer,” for which the organizers work closely together. This year, the festival will take place from Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3, between the Glyphothek and the TUM cafeteria .
The event focuses on music, but there’s also room for other art forms, such as comedy and cabaret. The musicians are usually up-and-coming artists, though well-known acts like Schandmaul and Juli have also performed on the TUNIX stage. This year, you can once again look forward to numerous concerts on all five days. The mix of genres ranges from indie to rock, pop, and hip-hop to folk. The lineup includes The Birds and The Elephant, Lisa Fitzek & Band, Samuel Wimmer, Rabbit Hills, Miss Maddison, and many more bands and musicians. Over 20 acts will be performing for you this year, delivering a top-notch musical extravaganza every day.
More program highlights at TUNIX
In addition to musical performances, there will be other acts at the festival. The opening ceremony on June 29 will feature the tapping of the first keg at 1:30 p.m. with Mayor Dominik Krause. It’s worth stopping by, as 30 liters of free beer will be served. On Tuesday, various talented performers will showcase their skills at the Open Stage, and on Wednesday, the Family Afternoon will offer a variety of activities for children. On Thursday, you can try your luck at bingo, and finally, on Friday, you can give your laugh muscles a workout at the comedy show.
Away from the stage, a wide variety of food options is waiting for you to try. In addition to the Greek platter, there’s steak, sausage, grilled cheese, falafel, and vegan gyros, among other things, so there’s truly something for everyone. For dessert, grab either waffles or crêpes if you like it warm, or ice cream to cool off. Of course, beer, soft drinks, cocktails, and mocktails are also available to make sure no one goes thirsty. Make yourself comfortable in the beer garden and listen intently to the acts on stage from there.
