The hustle and bustle of everyday life in the big city can be overwhelming. While we enjoy the exciting things to do in Munich that enrich our weekends and free time, it often takes away our peace and quiet. Then we long for a short break. What could be better than a trip to the beautiful surroundings of Munich? Only around 50 kilometers from Munich lies the picturesque municipality of Schliersee, nestled in the Bavarian Alps – the perfect idyll!

What can you do at Schliersee?
In the district of Miesbach in Upper Bavaria lies the picturesque municipality of Schliersee, which delights visitors with its breathtaking scenery. Schliersee itself is a popular destination for water sports and relaxation. Lake Schliersee is considered to be very clean, which is mainly due to the continuous ring canalization around the lake.
There are numerous hiking trails, which are divided into different levels of difficulty. The paths to the Schliersbergalm and Spitzingsee, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area, are particularly worthwhile.
No matter what time of year, this place offers a fantastic backdrop for an excursion. In addition to hiking, you can also visit the Markus Wasmeier Museum, which provides fascinating insights into traditional Bavarian life and crafts. After you’ve had your fill of electrifying activities, you should try out the local gastronomy. Pubs such as the Switscherstüberl offer Bavarian specialties and a cosy atmosphere with live music – perfect for sociable evenings.
A natural gem with a centuries-old legend

Lake Schliersee was formed by a glacier over 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. This formative glacial movement not only created the lake itself, but also the characteristic mountain and hilly landscape in the surrounding area. Settlement in the area dates back to the early Middle Ages. Particularly significant is the founding of the Schliersee monastery in 779, which served as the economic, cultural and religious center of the region.
According to legend, there is even an underground water connection between Schliersee and Tegernsee. Allegedly, lost objects that sank in one lake were found in the other. For example, the abbot of Tegernsee lost his key to the monastery church in the lake. A short time later, it was discovered in the entrails of a trout caught in Schliersee. Whether there is any truth to these stories or not, this legend only adds to the mystery of the place.
From Munich, Schliersee can be reached by car (A8 towards Salzburg, exit Weyarn) and by train in about an hour. There are numerous accommodation options, including cozy vacation apartments and hotels within walking distance of the main sights. So let’s get there: This natural gem awaits you in one of Bavaria’s most beautiful regions, inviting you to relax with its irresistible atmosphere. Whether with your loved ones or for a well-deserved break on your own – you can enjoy this special place just a stone’s throw from Munich.
