Germany is known for its good bread, yet the number of businesses dedicated to the art of baking is in sharp decline. Even Munich is not spared: Just this past summer, the long-established Rackl closed all its locations due to bankruptcy. Now , the Neulinger Bread and Pastry Shop is the next bakery to follow suit ; as of November, it will no longer exist as such.
Closing after 25 years

Ludwig Neulinger grew up in Lower Bavaria as the son of a baker couple and began helping out in the family business at a young age. Later, he moved to Munich, where he took over the branch of his former employer in 2001. This marked the birth of the Neulinger Bread and Pastry Shop at Volkartstraße 48. He delighted customers with his organic baked goods, and his concept proved successful.
This allowed Neulinger to open additional locations, and today the company operates a total of five locations in Munich. Karl Valentin even performed at the Haidhausen branch—long before Neulinger set up shop there. But after 25 years, it’s all coming to an end. Ludwig Neulinger is retiring and, as part of this, is closing all of his locations. Nevertheless, operations are set to continue at some locations.
The End of Neulinger: What’s Next
If you enjoyed shopping at Neulinger, you’ll only be able to do so in October. After that, there will be no more bakeries under this name in Munich. On October 31, the store in the Westend on Landsberger Straße and the headquarters on Gotzinger Straße in Sendling will close. The two branches on Volkartstraße in Neuhausen and the location in Haidhausen, however, are set to remain open and will continue under a new name.
The Fritzmühlenbäckerei plans to take over the shop and retain the same concept despite the name change. This means you’ll continue to find the finest quality organic baked goods here in the future. If you have a Neulinger loyalty card with a balance, you can use it until October 31 or request a refund. After that, the balance will expire.
