After we slipped into the new year with snow, which enchanted the whole of Munich, we are starting the weekend with a stormy start in the truest sense of the word. The storm depression “Elli” makes for a turbulent Friday, including a severe weather warning level 3 of 4 from the DWD. What you should look out for and what applies in Munich.
Freezing rain makes for slippery roads

After the persistent cold of the last few days with temperatures constantly in the minus range, which even caused the Nymphenburg Palace Canal to freeze over, the storm depression “Elli” moving in from the Atlantic is bringing milder plus degrees to Bavaria for a change. At the same time, the snow will turn to freezing rain, leading to slippery roads.
So be careful in any case if you have to leave the house and are out and about. In addition to the black ice, snow drifts also make visibility poor. If possible, you should stay at home and, above all, leave the car parked, even if the thermometer can climb up to 7°C. It will remain mild on Saturday as well, before temperatures slip back into negative territory on Sunday night.
Canceled trains and closed schools

Deutsche Bahn is expecting cancellations and delays to rail services due to the freezing temperatures. In southern Germany and Bavaria, this primarily affects long-distance services. Find out in advance from DB whether your train is running and set off early to avoid delays if you cannot postpone your journey. In some cases, DB will extend the validity of tickets.
Due to the severe weather warning, attendance classes will be canceled at various schools on Friday. This is particularly the case in the Upper Palatinate, e.g. in Regensburg, Amberg and Weiden. The Upper Bavarian cities and municipalities, on the other hand, tend not to cancel classes. In Rosenheim, Traunstein, Berchtesgadener Land and Munich, for example, classes will probably take place as usual. However, if children are unable to come to school due to the icy conditions, for example because trains or buses are canceled, their parents can report this to the schools and the children will then be excused from lessons.
