Summer has now fully arrived in Munich, and temperatures are once again regularly exceeding the 30°C mark. In this weather, most people seek relief from the heat in the Isar or at one of the many swimming lakes in and around Munich. However, most of them aren’t exactly known for being particularly warm. What’s a welcome refreshment for one person is simply too cold for another. Those of you who fall into the second group should add the Steinsee in Moosach to your list of swimming destinations. Here, you can swim in pleasantly warm water, so your trip won’t turn into an ice bath.
Cooling off without freezing
Some of you might be familiar with this: You take a trip to the lake on a hot weekend, looking forward to getting in the water, but as soon as you take your first steps in, you just want to turn right back around—it’s too cold! That can’t happen to you at Steinsee. As early as the beginning of summer, the water here reaches up to 23°C; in the height of summer, the temperature climbs to as high as 26°C. This makes Steinsee not only one of the warmest lakes in Germany, but also an extremely attractive destination for those who are always cold.
The water in this natural lake is fed by a spring, so the water quality is particularly good. The Steinsee certainly holds its own against the Lußsee. There are several reed beds along the shore that you’re not allowed to walk on. Also, air mattresses, surfboards, and inflatable boats aren’t allowed on the water. Still, you can have a great time, whether at the paid beach on the north shore or at the free Moosacher Bad in the southeast.
A Wide Range of Activities at Steinsee
The beach at Steinsee is especially recommended for families with children. There’s a lovely playground where the little ones can let off steam away from the water. The on-site lifeguards ensure added safety. If you don’t want to bring your own snacks, you can grab some treats and ice cream at the kiosk or stop by the beer garden. In addition , the Steinsee Restaurant is located here , where you can enjoy a wide variety of dishes. Every Thursday, they host an all-you-can-eat BBQ that barbecue fans shouldn’t miss. Private barbecuing is not permitted anywhere around Steinsee.
If you’d rather skip the admission fee, you can settle down on the spacious sunbathing lawns on the southeast shore . Here you’ll find a dock and plenty of shady spots where you can retreat. If you don’t need the amenities of the public beach, you’ll be in good hands here. By the way, the Steinsee owes its name to a stone Roman house whose remains were discovered here on the shore.
