The Munich tram is celebrating its 150th birthday this year, and to mark the anniversary, the first section of the Westtangente will go into operation this weekend. To celebrate this milestone, MVG is organizing a street festival that welcomes young and old alike. From now on, a new tram line will run through western Munich, improving public transport services. However, it will be a few years before the entire route is available.
A new tram for Pasing and Laim

The first section of the Westtangente was actually supposed to go into operation at the end of last year, but there were delays and the date was postponed to the end of February. Now the time has come, and despite MVG strikes, you can ride the new tram line on Saturday, February 28.
Tram 14, which has not existed in Munich since 1984, will now run between Gondrellplatz and Pasing Bahnhof. This means that Pasing now has one more line in addition to tram 19. However, this first stage is not intended to be the end of the line for 2026. According to current plans, the section between Romanplatz and Agnes-Bauer-Straße will be completed in the second half of the year. The entire Westtangente is expected to become part of Munich’s tram network by the end of 2028.
Inauguration ceremony for the section of the West Tangent

From now on, local residents can look forward not only to better public transport connections, but also to the end of the construction site. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2024, and now the first goal has been achieved with the completion of the Westtangente section. To celebrate the occasion, MVG is hosting a street party at Laimer Anger starting at 11:30 a.m., which is open to all citizens. Food and drinks will be available on site, as well as live music, and families can enjoy face painting for children.
At the festival, you can find out all about the further course of the construction work and the plans for the Tram West Tangent. Learn more about the progress of the project and talk to the team responsible. Last but not least, you can of course take your first ride on Tram 14 on the section of the West Tangent.
