The New Year is fast approaching and December in Munich is drawing to a close. After the preparations for the New Year’s Eve party, we start 2026: And that means not only the time of good resolutions and vacation planning, but also new things in Munich. The minimum wage is rising and MVV is planning changes. Another topic we can’t avoid in Munich in 2026: Renovations. We give you an overview of planned construction sites in Munich in the new year. So you can relax and avoid them.
Construction work on the streetcar

One of the most important projects for the traffic turnaround in Munich is the western streetcar tangent. It is intended to better connect the west of the city without you always having to take the detour via the main station. Construction will continue through the districts of Laim, Sendling and Hadern in 2026.
A milestone is planned for February 27, 2026: An important section of the streetcar – between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammerseestraße – is due to go into operation. Traffic on Fürstenrieder Straße and Wotanstraße will remain tight due to the track construction work.
Renewal of the main water pipe

Less visible, but still there: Stadtwerke München (SWM) is replacing one of the city’s most important drinking water pipes, which runs under Wotanstrasse and Fürstenrieder Strasse.
This work is closely linked to the streetcar construction. This is because the track bed for the streetcar can only be built above it once the new pipes have been laid deep in the ground. There will therefore be one-way traffic on Wotanstrasse until around August 2026.
Full closure of Dachauer Straße
More construction sites are planned in the area of Dachauer Straße. It is one of the most important access roads from the northwest, but will be completely closed. This is because Deutsche Bahn is renewing the railroad bridge over Dachauer Straße. As the bridge and the road below it are so narrow, the work cannot be carried out any other way.
However, the city of Munich is taking advantage of the full closure: The road, footpaths and cycle paths will also be completely rebuilt here afterwards. The closure between Breslauer Straße and Moosburger Straße is expected to last until the end of 2026. The detours will be signposted until then.
Modernization of the subway network and the railroad

Deutsche Bahn’s mammoth project in Munich continues: the second main line in the area of the main station and in Laim will also be with us in 2026. There will be regular weekend closures of the S-Bahn main line for maintenance and connection work.
In order to keep the aging network efficient, MVG will also be carrying out renovations in 2026. This includes planned construction sites along the U3/U6 and at Sendlinger Tor. Be prepared for rail replacement services with buses. After all, these will mostly take place during the Bavarian school vacations (Easter or summer) to reduce the impact on rush-hour traffic.
