Munich is home to many green oases, ranging from well-known parks like the Olympiapark to hidden gems like the Grünwaldpark. The English Garden is always particularly popular; on sunny days, people flock to its spacious lawn in front of the Monopteros. If that’s too much for you but you’re still in the mood for an English-style park, you should take a trip to Lake Ammersee. Here you’ll find Schacky Park, a true gem with plenty to discover.
English Garden with a Greek Twist
At the beginning of the 20th… century, the royal chamberlain and Baron Ludwig Freiherr von Schacky von Schönfeld andhis wife Julia purchased a meadow in Dießen on the Ammersee. This area was transformed into a spacious English-style park, which, together with the Diana Villa, became the couple’s summer residence. An apple trellis leads to the villa, which was presumably once the park’s main attraction.
At the other end of the trellis lies the Apollo Basin with its staircase. Throughout Schacky Park, you’ll discover many more sculptures featuring figures from Greek mythology, such as Diana and Venus. In addition, there are other fountains as well as a large staircase, which was officially inaugurated in 2025 following extensive restoration.
Across the entire 18 hectares of green space, you’ll find many more groups of trees, as is typical of English gardens. And just like in Munich’s English Garden, Schacky Park features a Monopteros and a tea house. From the Monopteros, an oak-lined avenue leads you to the duck pond with its duck house. An even larger pond awaits you in the western part of the park near the Monopteros, where there is also a boathouse.
Explore Schacky Park
Schacky Park is privately owned today, but you can visit it for free. It’s open year-round, from April through October between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and from November through March from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Since 2005, the Förderkreis Schaky-Park association has been taking care of the grounds and keeping them in good shape for you. Every second Saturday of the month, the association offers free guided tours of the park, during which you can gain more insight into the garden’s historical background. You can also explore it on your own and learn more from the informational signs on-site.
The Diana Villa is also privately owned and not open to the public. However, you can admire the lovely building with its Belvedere Tower and ornamental garden from the outside. If you’re planning a private celebration, you can also rent parts of Schacky Park. And every Sunday in May and September, you can enjoy live music at the Monopteros.
