Munich has many beautiful listed buildings whose magnificent architecture is literally worthy of an award. One such prize has now been won by a luxury hotel in the Old Town, whose building used to be home to the Royal Branch Bank. You can also spend the night in this pearl of neo-baroque and rococo style, as the hotel offers you luxurious service.
The building in Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße

The imposing building was built around the turn of the century as a branch for the Royal Branch Bank. At the end of the 19th century, the bank acquired three plots of land on the corner of Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße and Prannerstraße and had the palaces located there demolished. A large building was erected in their place in 1893, designed by architect Albert Schmidt. He was also responsible for many other buildings in Munich, such as the Löwenbräukeller and the Kustermann department store.
10 years later, the Königliche Bank, which later became the Bayerische Staatsbank, bought the adjoining land to the north and had an extension built here, which was attached to the existing building. In 1898, the bank also acquired the Palais Neuhaus-Preysing in Prannerstraße, but the connection to the other building was only established with a breakthrough in 1924. This had already been built in 1737 in the rococo style and served Ferdinand Maria Franz Freiherr von Neuhaus as his town residence. During the Second World War, the palace fell victim to bombing raids, which led to it being rebuilt.
In the early 2000s, the building was finally completely gutted. After the renovation, it briefly served as an event venue for HypoVereinsbank until The Lovelace Hotel finally moved in and the former bank building became a place to stay overnight. In 2023, the ownership changed again and instead of the Lovelace , you will now find the Rosewood.
The 5-star Rosewood hotel chain
The Rosewood hotels belong to a chain that originally came from the USA but is now owned by a company from Hong Kong. There are currently 30 of these hotels in 18 countries worldwide. The hotels are characterized by a high level of comfort, high-quality furnishings and 5-star service. The Rosewood in Munich has 132 rooms, eight function rooms, including two ballrooms, and five so-called Houses, which offer 400 square meters of space. The Rosewood also has a spa, a wide range of dining options and a live music program.
The building was also awarded the Prix Versailles this year. UNESCO has been presenting this global architecture prize, which recognizes outstanding building design, since 2015. In addition to hotels, museums, airports and restaurants also receive the award. This year, the Rosewood Munich is the only German building to be awarded the prize.
If you would like to spend a night at the Rosewood, you will have to dig a little deeper into your pockets. Prices start at €765 per night and quickly reach four figures. If that’s too expensive for you, you can make a detour to the spa or visit the restaurant instead. These, as well as the event rooms and the bar, are also open to non-guests.
