For most people, a night in a hotel is associated with relaxation and a little luxury in between. But if that’s too boring for you, you can stay in a special kind of hotel, such as the smallest hotel in the world. You can reach it in less than two and a half hours from Munich. Luxury, comfort and, above all, privacy await you here, as there are no other guests.
The legend of the smallest hotel in the world
The little house has been around since 1729. Back then, it was still a residential building, albeit not an ordinary one. The Bavarian state government tried to keep the birth rate low among less well-off people, for which various laws were enforced, sometimes even bans. The town of Amberg did not go that far, but it did require all couples wishing to marry to own land free of debt.
According to legend, a merchant subsequently used the gap between two houses to create another one. He had a wall built at the front and back, put a roof on it and the inexpensive alibi house for engaged couples was finished. They bought the house, got married and sold it on. The legend is immortalized on the door of the house in the form of a picture story.
It is possible that today’s name Eh’häusl is derived from this story. On the other hand, the name could also come from the early New High German Ehalten, which means “servants”. This was later reinterpreted as “marriage house”. In 1976 , the building collapsed in the course of construction work during which one of the neighboring houses was demolished and had to be rebuilt. Since then, the Eh’häusl has been a hotel.
Spend the night in the Eh’häusl
The hotel measures just 2.5 meters in width and was built on an area of around 20 square meters. Nevertheless, you don’t have to do without luxury. The inn was completely renovated in 2008 and since then has had a luxurious interior reminiscent of a hermitage.
The hotel can be booked by a maximum of two people, who then have the entire house at their disposal. As you enter, the gentle sounds of Verdi’s “La Triviata” immediately envelop you. In addition to the bedroom, you have a living area and a bathroom with a whirlpool. The open fireplace ensures cozy evenings on cold days. A sumptuous breakfast is served in the morning in the red lounge. There is also a kitchenette with a fridge where you can prepare your own meals. Or you can book the barbecue area for an outdoor BBQ. There is also a parking space for your car.
Amberg itself impresses with its ring wall that surrounds the town, its beautiful market square with the Gothic town hall as well as a variety of other impressive buildings and sights and a rich cultural offering. The town is also about an hour from Nuremberg, where you can take a day trip.
