As public transit riders in Munich this year, you’ll need strong nerves. Due to the renovation work between Goetheplatz and Poccistraße, the SEV has been in service for months. Just in time for Oktoberfest, the first phase of construction was completed, and the stations were temporarily reopened. Starting Monday, October 5, renovation work will resume, and you’ll have to deal with restrictions once again. This time, however, it’s not just the U3 and U6 that are affected— construction work is also taking place on the U4, U5, and U8 lines. Here’s what to expect in the coming weeks.
New escalators at Max-Weber-Platz

For the duration of the entire second construction phase at the Poccistraße and Goetheplatz subway stations, there will also be service restrictions on the U5 and U4 lines. From Monday, October 5, through Friday, November 27, there will be changes as two escalators at the Max-Weber-Platz station will be replaced during this period. Service on the U4 will be split into two sections: from Arabellapark to Max-Weber-Platz and from Odeonsplatz to Westendstraße. The stop at Lehel will therefore be omitted. The U5, on the other hand, will run through from Laimer Platz and skip Max-Weber-Platz.
A SEV service won’t be running, but you’ll have plenty of other alternatives to reach your destination. From Arabellapark, tram 16 via Lehel and tram 17 via Max-Weber-Platz will take you toward Stachus and the main station. Additionally, trams 19 and 21 run from Max-Weber-Platz toward the city center. You can also take the No. 21 from Ostbahnhof if you’re traveling on the U5 toward the city center. You can also board bus No. 100 at Prinzregentenplatz to go to Odeonsplatz.
An overview of the changes:
- The U4 will only operate on the Arabellapark–Max-Weber-Platz and Odeonsplatz–Westendestraße sections; the stop at Lehel will be omitted
- The U5 will run straight through from Laimer Platz and bypass Max-Weber-Platz
- Tram 16 takes you to Lehel, and tram 17 to Max-Weber-Platz
- You can reach downtown on trams 19 and 21
- Bus 100 runs from Prinzregentenplatz to Odeonsplatz
Further restrictions on the U5

Construction work will take place not only at Max-Weber-Platz but also around the Neuperlach Süd station. Fortunately, this work won’t last as long as the work at Max-Weber-Platz, so you’ ll only have to expect service restrictions on the U5 in this section until Sunday, November 8. Among other things, switches will be replaced and further modernization measures will be carried out in the tunnels as well as at the Therese-Giehse-Allee and
Neuperlach Süd.

The U5 will therefore only run as far as Neuperlach Zentrum, from where a SEV shuttle will take you to Neuperlach Süd. The U8, on the other hand, will be rerouted along the U2 line, so that it runs from Innsbrucker Ring via Trudering to Messestadt Ost, and the stops Michaelibad, Quiddestraße, and Neuperlach Zentrum will be skipped. You can only reach these stops via the U5. If you want to avoid the SEV to and from Neuperlach Süd, you can take the S5 instead. This line stops at Ostbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof, among other places, where you can transfer.
