The first pizzeria in Munich opened its doors in 1966 and took the city by storm. Today, there are more pizza places here than you can count, and new ones are popping up all the time. Now we can look forward to a new addition from the United Kingdom, as the Pizza Pilgrims chain is expanding into Germany. They’re celebrating their debut—where else but in Italy’s northernmost city? There will be two locations in Munich, with the first opening this October.
In search of the perfect pizza

The story of Pizza Pilgrims begins in 2012, when the two friends Thom and James set out on a pilgrimage through Italy. Starting at the southernmost tip, they traveled all the way to the north of the country to learn everything about the art of pizza-making. At the end of their journey, they put their newly acquired knowledge into practice and tried their hand at making the perfect Neapolitan pizza at home. This led to their first restaurant, which has since grown into a successful chain.
Now Pizza Pilgrims is set to conquer Germany as well, planning a total of 50 restaurants in partnership with L’Osteria. Munich is leading the way and will initially get two locations, one in Schwabing and one right in the city center. The store at Leopoldstraße 56 is already celebrating its grand opening this weekend, on October 31. Previously, the space was home to the restaurant Pide Go Minga. The second location will follow in January 2027 in the Tal district.
📅 Opening date: Saturday, October 31
🕑 Hours: Mon–Thu & Sun 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fri & Sat 11:30 a.m. to midnight
What to Expect at Pizza Pilgrims
Even though the opening of the first restaurant falls on Halloween, hopefully you’ll be spared any spooky surprises on Saturday. Instead, you can look forward to delicious food, with pizza naturally taking center stage. At Pizza Pilgrims, you’ll find traditionally made Neapolitan pizza, with dough prepared fresh daily. In addition to classic varieties, there are also unique options, such as those topped with truffles or in a carbonara style. Vegans will find plenty to enjoy here, just as much as meat-eaters.
You can enjoy your pizza either in the restaurant or take it to go. For dessert, there are also Italian classics—but with a house-special twist: sorbet made directly from lemons or tiramisu with Nutella. Drinks include wines, cocktails, and, of course, non-alcoholic soft drinks. If you’re not convinced yet, you can try the pizza in advance. James is currently on the road in Munich, selling his pizza slices at a 50% discount. So keep an eye out for the Pizza Pilgrims van—and with a little luck, you’ll get to enjoy it at a discount.
