Most of us spend the turn of the year celebrating with our loved ones. Whether you are hosting your own party or have been invited somewhere else and need a gift, you can still shop in Munich on New Year’s Eve. However, the opening hours of some stores are shortened on New Year’s Eve, so you should make sure you set off in good time to do your last-minute shopping.
Opening hours on New Year’s Eve: these rules apply

December 31 is a normal working day and, unlike Christmas Eve, the usual store closing times apply. While stores have to close at 2 pm on December 24, they are allowed to open from 6 am to 8 pm on New Year’s Eve as usual. Unlike Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve is not a “quiet day”, which is why there are no special legal regulations.
If you’ve already breathed a sigh of relief, we’re afraid you’ll have to slow down. Even though December 31 is a working day, this does not mean that you can simply go shopping everywhere until 8 pm. Many stores shorten their opening hours and close at 4 or even 2 pm. You should therefore find out in good time whether the supermarket you trust closes earlier and where you can go if the worst comes to the worst.
Where you can shop on New Year’s Eve in Munich

Many stores close their doors earlier on New Year’s Eve. This applies to drugstores as well as food and clothing stores and all other stores and specialist stores. However, if you have to work all day and can’t get to the shops in time or have forgotten something, there are also a few stores with longer opening hours on New Year’s Eve. You’ll have the best luck at the train stations and at the airport, although Lidl at Hackerbrücke also closes at 4 pm.
