Summer has arrived in Munich, and with it, the vacation season. If you haven’t started planning your vacation yet because you don’t know where to go, then you can try out this new flight route. Since June, Air Corsica has been flying you to the island’s capital twice a week with no layovers. This makes Munich the only city in Germany offering a direct flight to Ajaccio this year —and gives you the perfect opportunity to explore Corsica.
Napoleon’s Birthplace
Corsica is the fourth-largest Mediterranean island, and Ajaccio is its capital. It’s located in the west of the island and is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Today, Corsica is part of France, but until 1768 it was still part of Italy. Italian influences are still evident today, whether in the local language or in the cuisine. The center of Ajaccio is characterized by narrow, cobblestone alleys and multi-story old houses. Take a stroll to discover the small shops, pubs, and wine bars that invite you to browse and linger. For a bit of culture, visit the Maison Bonaparte, Napoleon’s birthplace. Today, it houses the National Museum of Corsica.
Ajaccio is right on the coast, so the beach is naturally just a short walk away. Spread out your towel or blanket on the meter-long white sandy beaches and soak up the sun. The crystal-clear water is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day. If you’re looking for more action, you can, of course, go surfing. Back in the city, you can enjoy an ice cream under the palm trees at Place De Gaulle or dine with a view of the sea at one of the many restaurants. If you miss the Bavarian Alps while on vacation, you can take a day trip into the island’s interior and go hiking in the mountains. And if you’d rather discover the real Nice instead of “Bavarian Nice,” just take the ferry to the mainland.
Direct flight from Munich to Ajaccio
If you’re now in the mood to explore Ajaccio for yourself, now is the best time to do so. Since June 11, Air Corsica has been offering a direct flight twice a week from Munich to the Corsican capital—the only one in all of Germany. Every Thursday and Sunday, you can fly to the Mediterranean island without a layover, and this service will continue through the end of September.
If Ajaccio doesn’t quite appeal to you, you can also fly from Munich to Calvi once a week —also via a direct flight—starting June 28. This small port city in the northwest captivates visitors with its bay, over which the old citadel towers. Here, you can enjoy a wonderful stroll along the promenade and, of course, go for a swim.
