There’s only one effective way to beat the current summer heat: get out of Munich and head to the water. Fortunately, we have more than enough swimming lakes in the surrounding area, so all you have to do is decide which one you want to visit. If you’re looking for a body of water that has a lot to offer, especially in terms of sports , then you should plan a trip to Lake Kochel.
The unassuming brother

Together with Lake Walchensee, Lake Kochel forms the “Land of Two Lakes” on the edge of the Alps. Because of its color, Lake Walchensee is also nicknamed the “Caribbean of Bavaria” and is thus probably the more popular destination of the two lakes. Lake Kochel may not be quite as impressive, but it, too, offers a picturesque view with a mountain panorama. It has a surface area of about 6 square kilometers and reaches a depth of up to 66 meters, making it significantly smaller and shallower than its “big brother.” This makes it particularly attractive for families with children to go swimming.
While you cool off in the water, the Herzogstand rises up before you, offering an impressive view. Mountaineers, on the other hand, hike up it to enjoy the view of both lakes from above. If you’re looking for a less challenging hike, head to the Lainbach Waterfall, where you can even take a dip in the pool at the base.
Sports at Lake Kochel

But Lake Kochel isn’t just great for swimming or hiking. There are numerous other sports you can enjoy in, on, or around the lake . Thanks to the foehn winds at the edge of the Alps—which can sometimes be very strong—Lake Kochel is a paradise for kiteboarders and windsurfers. The strong winds are also ideal for sailing. On calmer days, however, you can opt for stand-up paddleboarding or rowing.
Lake Kochel is also known for its climbing area, where you can boulder on real rock. There are more than 500 routes on walls up to 55 meters high—a real thrill guaranteed. With deep water soloing, you climb above the lake’s surface, which serves as a natural crash pad. If all that’s too exciting for you, you can of course just spend a relaxing day swimming at Kochelsee and lounge on the shore in the sun or in the shade of the trees.
