Munich has quite a few cool rooftop bars where you can wind down the day above the city’s rooftops. The Kulturdachgarten at the old Gasteig offers a particularly beautiful setting— it’s expected to be up here for the last time this year. Sustainability at lofty heights
Originally, the Kulturdachgarten was located on the former Alpina parking garage near the main train station, where you were able to enjoy the project from 2018 to 2021. Since 2023, it has been located on the site of the former Gasteig, where it will be open to you again this summer. The Kulturdachgarten isn’t just a simple rooftop bar— it’s a sustainable project.
The plantings provide a habitat for bats, peregrine falcons, pigeons, swifts, and other animals. There are also garden beds in a community garden tended by residents living near the Fat Cat. This also benefits the rooftop restaurants, which can source fresh herbs and vegetables right on site.
The Last Summer for the Cultural Rooftop Garden
Since the building needs to be renovated and the Fat Cat is only a temporary use of the space, this year is likely to be the last season you’ll be able to experience the Kulturdachgarten in its current form . Whether, how, and where it will continue in the future is still anyone’s guess. That’s why you definitely want to make the most of this summer to really enjoy the location one last time.
The Kulturdachgarten spans two levels, where you can grab a bite at several bars and food stands. This year, tutto pizza, Metro, and AMPM vs Hallumi are providing the on-site catering. You can get delicious wines at Vinaturel, and other drinks—like the ever-popular spritzers — are also waiting for you. Once you’ve grabbed something to eat or drink, find a cozy spot to sit— there are plenty of them here. Whether under umbrellas, on wooden planks, or at small tables, there are plenty of lovely little nooks where you can settle in.
To enter the Kulturdachgarten, however, you’ll first have to climb four floors without an elevator. Once you’ve made it up there, you’ll be rewarded with an incredibly beautiful view that offers not only a mountain panorama but also several Munich landmarks, including the Frauenkirche and the clock tower of the nearby Müller’s Volksbad. So don’t miss the final season at the Fat Cat before the building closes its doors in 2033.
