Sipping refreshing drinks on a rooftop terrace while watching the sun set over the city—that’s one of the many joys of summer in Munich. Fortunately, there are quite a few rooftop bars in Munich, so you’ll be spoiled for choice. Just last year, a new spot opened near Sendlinger Tor that you should definitely check out if you haven’t already. On the rooftop of the Cocoon Hotel, the Freischwimmer Bar invites you to enjoy delicious cocktails with a view and a swimming pool theme.
From the pool to the rooftop bar
Unfortunately, you won’t find a real swimming pool at the Freischwimmer, even though that was the hotel’s original plan. The operator had the Cocoon expanded to include a 7th floor in order to build a pool for guests up here. But the structural engineer put a stop to those plans, so they decided on the spot to create a bar instead of a swimming pool. That’s how the outdoor pool theme came about, which is reflected in the design.
Right at the entrance, you’ll find a large red high chair, just like the ones lifeguards like to use. The bar counter is tiled in blue and turquoise and bears the warning “Do not jump from the pool edge.” On one side , there are wooden swings dangling from the ceiling, which gives the bar a particularly playful vibe. The friendly staff wear red polo shirts, which really evokes the spirit of Freischwimmer, and there are many other little details, such as towels and swim fins used as decorative elements.
Sunset at the Freischwimmer
The Freischwimmer features both an indoor and an outdoor area. On sunny days, we definitely recommend sitting outside and enjoying the view over Munich. From here, you can see, among other things, the Old Peter and the New City Hall, as well as St. Paul’s Church toward Theresienwiese. On particularly clear days, you can even see the mountain panorama. Make yourself comfortable in one of the lounge chairs and admire the sunset over Munich. The view is certainly something special—and fortunately, that’s not all.
At the Freischwimmer, you’ll find a wide variety of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The signature cocktail, which shares the bar’s name, is pool-blue thanks to Blue Curaçao. Other ingredients include tequila, coconut syrup, and lime, which give it a fresh, summery flavor. Of course, you can also get an Aperol Spritz here, in both the regular and frozen versions. Plus, a different frozen drink is featured daily for the ultimate refreshment. On Martini Wednesday, buy two Martinis and get a third one free. It’s definitely worth stopping by with your friends on that day. If you don’t drink alcohol, you can of course opt for mocktails instead. And for those of you who are particularly fitness-conscious, order one of the protein drinks.
